Overview
The Rudolf-Proksch-Hütte (also known simply as the Prokschhütte) is a Schutzhütte — an Alpine club mountain hut and restaurant — owned by the Alpenverein Gebirgsverein (Österreichischer Gebirgsverein, ÖAV) and located at 541 m above sea level on the Pfaffstättner Kogel, part of the Anninger area in the municipality of Pfaffstätten, Bezirk Baden, Lower Austria. It sits in the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods), roughly a 30-minute walk from the trailhead, and is a well-known destination for hikers and day-trippers from Vienna and the surrounding region. The hut was built at the request of the Österreichischer Gebirgsverein and formally opened on 11 May 1930, named after Rudolf Proksch, the association's chairman who had died in 1925. It has operated as a year-round Gastwirtschaft (inn/restaurant) since its opening. Directly beside the hut stands the Klesheim-Warte, a 9 m iron lookout tower opened on 12 July 1914 and named after Anton Freiherr von Klesheim; a small hut at its base was operated until the Rudolf-Proksch-Hütte was completed. From the tower there are views toward Vienna, Hungary and the Schneeberg. The hut is a category III Alpine club hut with no dormitory beds, mattress camp or winter room, but it is family-friendly and has mobile phone reception. It is managed by a tenant (Pächter) and a hut warden (Hüttenwart). As of the 2024/2025 seasons the tenant was Florian Ernst and the hut warden Andreas Winter. Summer operation runs from early May to the end of September, and winter operation from early October to the end of April, generally Wednesday to Sunday and on public holidays. Over the decades the hut has been modernised: it was electrified in 2003 and connected to the sewage system, and a forest playground was added on the grounds in 2007. In the autumn/winter 2012/13 issue of the magazine Freizeit & Kulinarik it was voted the most popular hut in eastern Austria, and the mountain sports magazine Bergsteiger twice awarded it the title "Lieblingshütte" (favourite hut). After a period of legal disputes and a badly needed general renovation, the hut was closed from 28 June 2015 and reopened on 28 May 2017, with a new kitchen building and renovated roof, facade, electrical and water installations, outdoor areas and the Klesheim lookout tower; the Gebirgsverein put the cost at around 100,000 euros, partly covered by the municipality of Pfaffstätten and the province of Lower Austria. The hut is reached on foot from Pfaffstätten-Einöde (about 45 minutes), Gumpoldskirchen (about 1 hour 45 minutes, for example via the Beethoven long-distance trail), Baden (about 1 hour) or Pfaffstätten railway station (about 1 hour). It is a classic example of the Austrian Alpine club hut tradition, combining a hospitality business with the stewardship of a historic lookout tower and trail infrastructure in the Vienna Woods.
History
The Rudolf-Proksch-Hütte owes its existence to the Österreichischer Gebirgsverein (Austrian Mountain Association), a section of the Österreichischer Alpenverein. In 1925, under its then chairman Rudolf Proksch, the association received permission to build a shelter house on the Pfaffstättner Kogel. Rudolf Proksch died in 1925 at the age of 47; he was the grandfather of Udo Proksch. The building was ceremonially opened on 11 May 1930 and has been operated as a year-round inn ever since. The site is closely linked to the Klesheim-Warte, a 9 m iron lookout tower opened on 12 July 1914 and named after Anton Freiherr von Klesheim (1812–1884), a co-founder of Viennese dialect literature. A small hut built into the base of the tower was operated until the Rudolf-Proksch-Hütte was completed. In the decades after opening, the hut became a popular excursion destination in the Vienna Woods. In 2003 it was electrified and connected to the sewage system in exemplary fashion; in 2007 a forest playground was created on the property. In the autumn/winter 2012/13 issue of the magazine Freizeit & Kulinarik, the Rudolf Proksch Hütte was voted the most popular hut in eastern Austria, and the mountain sports magazine Bergsteiger awarded it the title "Lieblingshütte" (favourite hut) twice in succession (spring 2013 and summer 2014). The hut's recent history includes a difficult period. Because of legal disputes as well as its poor condition and an unavoidable general renovation, it was closed from 28 June 2015. It reopened on 28 May 2017 after a comprehensive refurbishment: a new kitchen building was erected, and the roof, facade, electrical and water installations, all outdoor facilities and the Klesheim lookout tower were renovated. According to the Gebirgsverein, the cost amounted to around 100,000 euros, partly borne by the municipality of Pfaffstätten and the province of Lower Austria. Today the hut remains owned by the Alpenverein Gebirgsverein, based in Vienna, and is run by a tenant and a hut warden. It operates seasonally, with summer service from early May to the end of September and winter service from early October to the end of April, generally Wednesday to Sunday and on public holidays. It is a category III Alpine club hut without dormitory beds, mattress camp or winter room, but it is family-friendly and has mobile phone reception. It is reached on foot from Pfaffstätten-Einöde, Gumpoldskirchen, Baden or Pfaffstätten railway station, and lies near the Beethoven long-distance trail.
