Overview

Programmez! is a French print and online magazine devoted to software development and to programming languages and information technologies. It was launched in April 1998 by the publisher Sepcom, led by Jean Kaminsky, after two successful special programming issues of its then flagship title Compatibles PC Magazine. Initially bimonthly, it moved to a monthly schedule in September 1998. The magazine is known for including code pages and, in its early years, for shipping a CD-ROM attached to the cover, a signature 'plus-product' of Sepcom's titles that helped drive newsstand sales. The title changed hands several times: it was acquired by the company GO-02 in 2002, and in October 2013 it was bought by NEFER-IT from publisher G0 02. Its first editor-in-chief was Matthieu Thfoin; since 2002 the editor-in-chief has been François Tonic, who had previously served as deputy editor-in-chief in 2000 and as a freelancer from 1998. Over the years Programmez! has published numerous special issues, many dedicated to Linux, Java or the Microsoft .NET platform. Editorially, Programmez! covers Microsoft Windows, Linux and open source generally, and introduces readers to new programming languages. In the late 1990s it helped popularize the Python language in France. It also runs a discussion forum on programming in which its authors participate. Beyond the flagship magazine, NEFER-IT launched Inside < C# > in 2021, dedicated to the C# language and the .NET framework, and since 2019 has also published Technosaures, a review devoted to the history of microcomputing. Today Programmez! maintains an active website at programmez.com, offering news, expert commentary and magazine issues including special editions such as a security/post-quantum/hacking issue. It remains a reference publication for French-speaking developers.

History

Programmez! was launched in April 1998 by the publisher Sepcom, led by Jean Kaminsky. The decision to create it followed the success of two special 'Spécial programmation' issues of Sepcom's then flagship title, Compatibles PC Magazine. Encouraged by the response, the publisher turned the concept into a standalone magazine. It began as a bimonthly publication and adopted its definitive monthly rhythm in September 1998. The magazine was characterized by pages of code; in issue number 1, François Bourdoncle, author of AltaVista, showed readers how to build a proxy server in Java. It also offered a CD-ROM attached to the cover, wrapped in a blister pack. This 'plus-product' was a hallmark of Sepcom's magazines and contributed to their newsstand success. The first editor-in-chief was Matthieu Thfoin. In 2002 the company GO-02 bought the title. Since 2002 the editor-in-chief has been François Tonic, who had first joined as deputy editor-in-chief in 2000 and had been a freelancer since 1998. The magazine published many special issues, including numerous ones devoted to Linux, Java and the Microsoft .NET platform. In October 2013, the magazine was acquired by NEFER-IT from publisher G0 02. Editorially, Programmez! runs a programming discussion forum in which its authors take part. It covers Microsoft Windows, Linux and open source in general, and introduces readers to new programming languages; in the late 1990s it helped make Python popular in France. In 2021 NEFER-IT launched Inside < C# >, a magazine dedicated to the C# language and the .NET framework, and since 2019 it has also published Technosaures, a review devoted to the history of microcomputing. The magazine remains active, with a website offering news, expert commentary and issues including a security/post-quantum/hacking special.
