Pro Infirmis

Pro Infirmis describes itself as a specialist organization for people with disabilities that works for self-determination and inclusion, advising, accompanying and supporting people with disabilities and their relatives throughout Switzerland. Its history page states that over 100 years it has developed into the largest Swiss specialist organization for people with disabilities, and that since 1920 it has played a pioneering role in developments that have shaped the country's disability policy. It reports around 1,600 employees at 50 locations and says it is represented in all regions of Switzerland through its cantonal offices and advice centres.

It describes its origin as an umbrella organization with around a dozen members, each specialized in its own area, which became an organization for people with physical, cognitive, psychological or sensory disabilities. Through its cantonal business and advice centres, Pro Infirmis says it is represented in all regions of Switzerland today. Its history is closely tied to the development of the Swiss social system in the 20th century, and since 1920 it has played a pioneering role in numerous developments that have shaped the country's disability policy. The organization describes a century-long shift from a time when disability rather than the person was the focus, to a present in which people with disabilities are visible and recognized as self-determined persons, alongside a change in vocabulary from «anormal» to «Mensch mit Behinderung» and the emergence of a vision of an inclusive society.
