Overview

Pro Grigioni Italiano (officially abbreviated Pgi, Italian for 'For Italian Graubünden') is a Swiss language- and cultural-political organisation founded in Chur in 1918. Its mission is to preserve and promote the Italianità — Italian language and culture — in Italian Graubünden (Grigionitaliano), the southern valleys of the trilingual Canton Graubünden, and to defend the interests of the Italian-speaking minority at cantonal and federal level. The association is headquartered in Chur and structured as a federation led by a Consiglio direttivo (executive board) and the office of the central secretariat in Chur. The Pgi operates through ten sections, five of them outside Canton Graubünden. Within the canton, sections are based in Castasegna (Bregaglia), Poschiavo (Valposchiavo), Grono (Moesano/Misox), St. Moritz (Engadin) and Davos; outside the canton there are sections in Bellinzona and Lugano as well as in Bern and Zürich. The Bregaglia, Coira, Engadina, Moesano and Valposchiavo sections each run a regional centre (Centro regionale) supported by a cultural operator. The association counts roughly 1,500 members across its sections. Pgi's publishing and cultural programme is central to its identity. It publishes the Almanacco del Grigioni italiano (founded 1918) and the Quaderni grigionitaliani (founded 1931), and organises meetings, conferences and cultural events such as the Moesano literature festival. For the recognition of Italian as a traditional and constitutive language minority of the trilingual canton, it cooperates with the Romansh organisation Lia Rumantscha and the Walservereinigung Graubünden. Franco Milani of Poschiavo is the association's president (as of 2024).

History

Pro Grigioni Italiano was founded in Chur in 1918 as a language- and cultural-political organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting the Italianità of Italian Graubünden, the southern valleys of the trilingual Canton Graubünden. From its earliest years it combined advocacy for the Italian-speaking minority with publishing: the Almanacco del Grigioni italiano was established in the same year as the association, 1918, and the Quaderni grigionitaliani followed in 1931. These two publications became enduring vehicles for the cultural life and self-representation of the Grigionitaliano community. Over the following decades the Pgi developed a federative structure, with a central secretariat and executive board in Chur and a network of local sections. Within Canton Graubünden, sections were established in Castasegna (Bregaglia), Poschiavo (Valposchiavo), Grono (Moesano/Misox), St. Moritz (Engadin) and Davos; outside the canton, sections operate in Bellinzona and Lugano as well as in Bern and Zürich. Five of the ten sections are located outside Graubünden, reflecting the diaspora of Grigionitaliani in other parts of Switzerland. The Bregaglia, Coira, Engadina, Moesano and Valposchiavo sections each maintain a regional centre staffed with the support of a cultural operator. Alongside publishing, the Pgi organises meetings, conferences and cultural events, including a literature festival in the Moesano. It works for the recognition of Italian as a traditional and constitutive language minority of the trilingual canton, cooperating in this effort with the Romansh organisation Lia Rumantscha and the Walservereinigung Graubünden. The association today counts roughly 1,500 members across its sections. Franco Milani of Poschiavo serves as president (as of 2024).
