History

The history of Privat-Brauerei Schmucker reaches back to 1663, when Ulrich Schönberger began brewing his own beer in Mossautal, where the brewery still stands today. The foundation was laid in 1780 by his great-great-grandson Nikolaus, who opened a brewery inn and, as 'Hirschwirt', wrote Odenwald beer history. In the 19th century Johann Gottlieb Schmucker gave the brewery its current name and made it a large regional brewery that shaped and developed the brewing culture of its home region. Around 80 people work at the brewery today, and the Schmucker brand stands for roughly 20 Odenwald beer specialties.
