Overview

Privatbrauerei Gebr. Mayer is a family-owned German brewery based in Oggersheim, a district of Ludwigshafen in Rhineland-Palatinate. It traces its origins to 1846, when Christian Ludwig Christ established a small brewery along the Kreuzgasse. The brewery has operated under the Gebrüder Mayer (Mayer Brothers) name since 1872, when Carl Daniel Mayer and his brother Fritz Mayer took it over jointly. Today it is run by Frank and Hans-Jörg Mayer, the fifth brewing generation of the family, and it is described as the oldest existing company within the city limits of Ludwigshafen. The brewery positions itself as a pure craft operation. According to its own account, there are no computers in production; the brewers regulate and control all processes by hand. Because the raw materials are natural products, the beer does not always taste exactly the same. Hops and malt come from sustainable, integrated controlled cultivation. The brewery allows nearly eight weeks for fermentation and maturation, and part of the beer is bottled unfiltered, which intensifies individual aroma and flavour notes. Out of environmental responsibility it uses exclusively reusable bottles and kegs. Mayer's beers are mainly available in the Ludwigshafen region. The range comprises a total of 17 beer types, with Zwickelbier being the best-selling variety. Recent additions include the Pfalzstoff introduced in 2011 and a non-alcoholic wheat beer. The brewery is a member of Brauring, a cooperation of private breweries from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Its brick industrial-revolution-era buildings shape the appearance of the site and reflect its long history in the region.

History

The brewery's history begins in 1846, when Christian Ludwig Christ created a small brewery along the Kreuzgasse in Oggersheim. One of Christ's daughters married Carl Daniel Mayer of Alzey, who became a partner in 1866; the brewery was then called Christ & Mayer. In 1872 Christ & Mayer was dissolved and the brewery was taken over jointly by Carl Daniel Mayer and his brother Fritz Mayer (1848–1899) under the name Gebrüder Mayer, so the brewery has been called Gebr. Mayer since then. The brothers Heinrich Mayer (1876–1955), Wilhelm Mayer (1877–1931) and Albert Mayer (1879–1929) were managing partners of the brewery from 1904 to 1929. In 1929 Hans Mayer (1908–1964), son of Willy Mayer, joined, and in 1933 Fritz Mayer (1907–1955), son of Albert Mayer, followed. In the 1960s Hans-Dieter (son of Hans Mayer) and Hans-Gerd Mayer (son of Fritz Mayer) took over the business. The current management is in the hands of the brothers Frank and Hans-Jörg Mayer, the fifth brewing generation. Mayer's beers are mainly available in the Ludwigshafen region. For environmental reasons the beer is bottled only in reusable containers. A total of 17 beer types are produced. The best-selling type is Zwickelbier. The most recent types are the Pfalzstoff introduced in 2011 and a non-alcoholic wheat beer. The brewery is a member of Brauring, a cooperation between private breweries in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. According to the brewery's own account, it remains a pure craft operation: there are no computers in production, and the brewers regulate and control all processes by hand. Because the raw materials are pure natural products, the beer does not always taste exactly the same. Hops and malt come from sustainable, integrated controlled cultivation. Nearly eight weeks are allowed for fermentation and maturation, after which the beers are partly bottled unfiltered, intensifying individual aroma and flavour notes. The brewery uses exclusively reusable bottles and kegs. Its brick buildings from the industrial revolution era shape the appearance of the oldest existing company in Ludwigshafen.
