Overview

Privatbrauerei Fritz Egger is an Austrian family-owned private brewery. According to its official website, it has brewed Egger beer since 1978 in Unterradlberg, describing itself as one of the largest Austrian private breweries in family ownership. Its roots trace to a 17th-century brewery in Kufstein, and the family has owned the brewery, a sawmill and agriculture in St. Johann, Tirol since 1866. The brewery moved from Tirol to Unterradlberg in Lower Austria, where the brewery was completed in 1978 and the first beer was bottled in June of that year. It brews according to the German Reinheitsgebot. Its product range includes Egger Märzen, Egger Zwickl, Egger Zisch, Egger Zitrusradler and Egger Hopf'n'Roll.

History

The roots of today's Privatbrauerei Egger lie in the 17th century. In 1675 the suburban brewery of "Pierpreu" Hans Gwercher in Kufstein was first mentioned in a document. Since 1866 the brewery, a sawmill and agriculture in St. Johann, Tirol, have been in family ownership of the Egger family. As there was soon not enough space for the expanding company under the Wilder Kaiser, Fritz Egger found a new company location in Unterradlberg. Two decisive criteria led to the decision to move from Tirol to Lower Austria: sufficient water of outstanding quality, and the ability to supply two-thirds of Austria well from this location. In 1976 the outdated brewery in Kufstein finally shut down its brewhouse. In 1978 the brewery in Unterradlberg was completed and in June of the same year the first beer was bottled. From day one, brewing in Unterradlberg has followed the German Reinheitsgebot. Entering the beer business at that time was very difficult because the beer market was subject to a beer cartel; a few large beer producers had the market firmly in hand, and only private sales were exempt from the cartel-protected beer trade. But the Egger family was not deterred.
