Overview

Privatbrauerei Eibau i.Sa. GmbH is a German private brewery based in Eibau, today part of the municipality of Kottmar in Saxony. Its origins lie in a decision taken in 1786 by the Zittau brewing burghers (Bierbürgerschaft Zittau) to build a rural brewery to supply the villages remote from Zittau. King Friedrich August I of Saxony approved Eibau as the site for the first rural brewery in the Zittau area, and the Landbrauerei Eibau was actually built in 1810. Since its foundation the brewery has produced Eibauer Schwarzbier, making it one of the oldest black beers in Germany. The brewery burned down in 1863 and was rebuilt; Gustav Adolf Theodor Krampf bought it after the reconstruction. From 1900 to 1907 it produced a caramel Malzbier (Eibauer Porter with about 2.5% alcohol by volume), a period described as the brewery's zenith. On 29 January 1937 master brewer Hans Münch acquired the Eibau brewery and ran it until 1972. On 14 May 1945 the first brew with twelve percent original wort was made on the orders of the Soviet headquarters. In May 1972 the brewery was expropriated and incorporated into the Landskron Brau-Manufaktur in Görlitz. In 1990 the descendants bought the business back and ran it as a family company until 2008. After the company was sold in 2010 it was renamed Privatbrauerei Eibau i.Sa. In 1998 the brewing licence of Marienthal Abbey was acquired, and German Beer is also brewed, originally produced at the Sternburg brewery in Lützschena. Today the brewery operates a full production chain on site, from raw-material intake, brewhouse, laboratory and tanks through fermentation and maturation, barrel filling, bottle filling and can filling (5 l / 2 l and 0.5 l / 0.33 l cans) to logistics and administration. It sells directly through a factory outlet (Werksverkauf) and an online shop for drinks, promotional items and clothing. Its product range includes Eibauer St.M., Zittauer Bürgerbäu, Lausitzer Häusel, German Beer and AQUALINE, alongside the eibauer.world brand. In 2022 Eibauer Schwarzbier, Eibauer Hefeweizen and Eibauer Jubiläums Pilsner 1810 won DLG gold medals, and the brewery has invested in optimising its brewing process with support from Saxon state funds.

History

The history of Privatbrauerei Eibau begins with a decision taken in 1786 by the Zittau brewing burghers (Bierbürgerschaft Zittau) to build their own brewery in order to supply the villages remote from Zittau. King Friedrich August I of Saxony (King of Saxony 1806–1827) approved Eibau as the site of the first rural brewery in the Zittau area. Because construction was costly, the Landbrauerei Eibau was not actually built until 1810, when the brewing commune of Zittau erected it and it obtained brewing rights. In the meantime Ebersbach had unsuccessfully applied for the brewing rights for the region in 1786 and 1802. Initially part of the brewing water came from the Beckenberg mill, about 500 metres away, and was piped to the brewery through wooden pipes. Since its foundation the brewery has brewed Eibauer Schwarzbier, making it one of the oldest black beers in Germany. The brewery burned down in 1863. After its reconstruction it was bought by Gustav Adolf Theodor Krampf. In 1891 his sons Johann Georg Krampf and Otto Krampf took over the brewery and ran the business as an open trading company, "Theodor Krampf". From 1900 to 1907 the brewery produced a caramel Malzbier (Eibauer Porter with about 2.5% alcohol by volume), a period regarded as the brewery's zenith. On 29 January 1937 master brewer Hans Münch acquired the Eibau brewery and directed it until 1972. On 14 May 1945 the first brew of beer containing twelve percent original wort was made on the orders of the Soviet headquarters. In May 1972 the brewery was expropriated and incorporated into the Landskron Brau-Manufaktur in Görlitz. In 1990 the descendants bought the company back and ran it as a family business until 2008. After the company was sold in 2010 it was renamed Privatbrauerei Eibau i.Sa. In 1998 the brewing licence of Marienthal Abbey was acquired; German Beer is also brewed, originally produced at the Sternburg brewery in Lützschena. In the present era the brewery operates a complete on-site production chain: raw-material intake, brewhouse, laboratory, tanks, fermentation and maturation, barrel filling, bottle filling, and can filling for 5 l / 2 l and 0.5 l / 0.33 l cans, plus logistics and administration. It sells through a factory outlet (Werksverkauf) and an online shop offering drinks, promotional items and clothing. Its brands include Eibauer St.M., Zittauer Bürgerbäu, Lausitzer Häusel, German Beer, AQUALINE and eibauer.world. In 2022 Eibauer Schwarzbier, Eibauer Hefeweizen and Eibauer Jubiläums Pilsner 1810 received DLG gold medals, one of the brewing industry's most important competitions, and the brewery has invested in optimising its brewing process with co-financing from tax funds based on the budget adopted by the Saxon state parliament.
