Overview

Prinoth is an Italian industrial-equipment manufacturer headquartered in Sterzing, South Tyrol. The company is best known for snow groomers used to prepare ski slopes, but its business has expanded into tracked utility vehicles and vegetation-management machinery. Its equipment is designed for demanding terrain where conventional wheeled vehicles may have limited access, including snowfields, construction sites, pipeline and utility corridors, forests, and soft or unstable ground. The business began in 1951 when racing driver Ernesto Prinoth opened a garage in Sterzing. Prinoth developed its first tracked snow-groomer prototype, the P 60, in 1962, and placed the first production vehicle into assembly two years later. Snow grooming remained the company’s core activity for decades, with the product range eventually developing into multiple model families, including Husky, Leitwolf and Bison. The brand’s snow vehicles serve ski resorts and other operators responsible for slope preparation and snow-surface maintenance. A major ownership change occurred in 2000, when Prinoth was acquired by the Leitner Group. The company retained its name and operated as an independent business within the group. Prinoth subsequently broadened its activities through the acquisition of parts of Camoplast’s industrial-vehicle business. In 2005 it acquired the design, engineering, research and development, service, parts and sales operations associated with Camoplast’s groomer range; in 2009 it acquired the remaining development, design, production, sales and service operations of the industrial division. These transactions established a broader tracked-vehicle business, including the Panther crawler-carrier range. Prinoth later entered vegetation management. In 2011 it acquired a 51% stake in German forestry-machinery maker AHWI Maschinenbau, creating the basis for a business focused on mulching, forestry work and vegetation control. Släpliftprodukter AB, a Swedish producer of tracks for snow groomers, became part of Prinoth in 2014. In 2021 Prinoth expanded the segment further by acquiring all of the capital stock of Jarraff Industries, a United States manufacturer of right-of-way maintenance, land-clearing and tree-care equipment. The company has production sites in Italy, Canada, the United States and Germany. Snow groomers are manufactured at the original Sterzing facility; snow groomers and crawler carriers are also produced in Granby, Quebec; and vegetation-management machinery is produced in Herdwangen, Germany, and St. Peter, Minnesota. Prinoth operates an international spare-parts logistics centre in Telfs, Austria. Prinoth has also presented alternative-drive concepts aimed at reducing the environmental impact of heavy off-road equipment. In 2020 it showed the battery-electric Husky eMotion and the hydrogen fuel-cell-powered Leitwolf h2Motion. A subsequent Leitwolf h2Motion concept using a hydrogen internal-combustion engine was presented in 2022. These vehicles demonstrate the company’s interest in alternative propulsion, although the cited reference material does not establish that the concepts became regular production models. In October 2024, Prinoth opened an expansion of its Granby production facility.

History

Prinoth traces its origins to 1951, when racing driver Ernesto Prinoth established a garage in Sterzing, South Tyrol. The enterprise gradually moved from garage operations into the development of tracked snow vehicles. In 1962 it produced the P 60 prototype, followed by the first production vehicle in 1964. Snow groomers became the company’s defining product and were developed for the preparation and maintenance of ski slopes and other snow surfaces. In 2000, Prinoth was acquired by the Leitner Group. Although ownership changed, the business continued using the Prinoth name and remained an independently operated company within the group. The company’s strategic scope widened during the following decade through the integration of industrial tracked-vehicle activities formerly associated with Camoplast, itself connected with Bombardier’s industrial-vehicle operations. In November 2005, Prinoth acquired the groomer division’s design, engineering, research and development, service, parts and sales operations, while Camoplast continued manufacturing. In February 2009, Prinoth acquired the remaining development, design, production, sales and service operations of that industrial division. This gave Prinoth a business beyond snow groomers and supported the development of tracked carriers capable of working on soft soil, mud and other terrain unsuitable for many wheeled vehicles. The company entered vegetation management through a 2011 acquisition of a 51% interest in AHWI Maschinenbau, a German forestry-machinery manufacturer based in Herdwangen. AHWI became the foundation for Prinoth’s forestry and mulching activities. In 2014, Swedish track manufacturer Släpliftprodukter AB of Ludvika also became part of Prinoth, strengthening the company’s connection to snow-groomer track systems. Prinoth’s vegetation-management portfolio expanded in October 2021 when it acquired Jarraff Industries, a United States company producing machinery for right-of-way maintenance, land clearing and tree care. This broadened the company’s activities in power-line corridors, transport routes and other areas where vegetation must be removed or controlled. During the 2020s, Prinoth publicly explored alternative propulsion for heavy snow equipment. In December 2020 it presented the Husky eMotion, a battery-electric snow-groomer concept, and the Leitwolf h2Motion, a hydrogen fuel-cell concept driving an electric motor. On 23 September 2022 it presented another Leitwolf h2Motion version using a hydrogen internal-combustion engine. The available reference does not indicate that these concepts had entered full-scale commercial production. Prinoth operates as part of the High Technology Industries group, which also includes Leitner, Skytrac and Demaclenko. Its manufacturing footprint extends across Italy, Canada, the United States and Germany. Sterzing remains the company’s headquarters and original production location for snow groomers. Granby, Quebec, produces snow groomers and crawler carriers, while facilities in Herdwangen, Germany, and St. Peter, Minnesota, produce vegetation-management equipment. The company also operates a spare-parts logistics centre in Telfs, Tyrol. In October 2024, it opened an expansion of its Granby production facility, reflecting continued investment in its North American manufacturing base.
