Overview

Primerjalna književnost (PKn) is a Slovenian scholarly journal dedicated to comparative literature, literary theory, methodology of literary studies, literary aesthetics, and related fields. It has been published since 1978 by the Slovenian Comparative Literature Association (Slovensko društvo za primerjalno književnost). The journal appears twice a year, though between 2004 and 2025 it was published three times annually. It publishes original and review scientific articles, thematic sections, and occasionally reviews, interviews, and other contributions. Interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged. Individual articles are published in Slovenian or English; however, to ensure the continuity of Slovenian professional terminology, authors affiliated with Slovenian institutions must submit articles in Slovenian. Unsolicited articles in English are accepted for peer review only if they comparatively address Slovenian literature. The journal's focus is on exploring connections between Slovenian and European or world literature, questions of the existence, structure, and function of literary art, and critical examination of literary movements and their role in Slovenia. Thus, in addition to its scholarly function, it also fulfills a broader cultural role. The journal is available online since 2000 and is hosted on the Open Journal Systems platform of ZRC SAZU. It has ISSN 0351-1189 for the print edition and ISSN 2591-1805 for the online edition. The current editor-in-chief is Marijan Dović. The editorial board includes Marko Juvan, Alenka Koron, Dejan Kos, Vanesa Matajc, Darja Pavlič, Vid Snoj, and Jola Škulj. The journal supports open access to research data and follows FAIR principles. It is a significant publication in the field of comparative literature in Slovenia and has gained international recognition, partly through occasional bilingual special issues.

History

Primerjalna književnost was founded in 1978 by the Slovenian Comparative Literature Association (Slovensko društvo za primerjalno književnost). The first issue featured contributions from leading scholars such as Anton Ocvirk, Dušan Pirjevec, and Janko Kos. The journal was established as a venue for comparative literature and literary theory, aiming to explore connections between Slovenian literature and European literary and artistic phenomena. It also intended to publish bibliographic and documentary contributions. For the first twenty volumes, the journal was edited by Darko Dolinar. From 1998 to 2002, Tomo Virk served as editor-in-chief, and in 2003, Darja Pavlič took over editorial work. The current editor-in-chief is Marijan Dović. Over the years, the journal expanded, typically publishing eight articles per issue instead of four. Since 2000, it has been available online. Occasionally, in addition to two regular issues per year, a special bilingual issue is published, which has helped broaden its international recognition. The journal has maintained a focus on Slovenian literature, comparative history, epistemology, and methodology of literary studies. It continues to be a central publication for comparative literature in Slovenia.
