Prest!

Prest! is a free monthly local journal published in the Basque language (euskara) for the Deusto district of Bilbao, in the Basque Country, Spain. It was founded by Berbaizu Deustuko Euskara Elkartea, a Deusto-based Basque-language association established in 2000, and its first issue appeared in March 2001, on the eve of the San José festivities celebrated in Deusto. The publication is currently produced by BLB Komunikazioa Kooperatiba Elkartea, a cooperative that also publishes the Bilbao digital news outlet Uriola. Prest! is written entirely in Basque and is distributed free of charge, with a digital edition available on the Uriola platform. The journal serves readers in Bilbao's District 1, which comprises the neighbourhoods of Arangoiti, Deusto, Elorrieta, Erribera, Ibarrekolanda and San Ignacio. Its stated aims are to strengthen the Basque-speaking community of the Deustualdea area, promote reading in Basque and provide local information. Each issue runs to around 30 pages and typically features a large cover photograph of the interviewee, alongside reports, articles, opinion pieces and interviews. A monthly interview with a local figure is a regular feature; in March 2022, for example, the interviewee was Iñigo Lekue, a Deusto-born Athletic Club footballer. A comic strip often appears on the final pages. Editorially, Prest! works in favour of the normalisation of the Basque language and adopts a left-wing, grassroots perspective, reporting on local social movements such as the feminist group, auzolan (community work) initiatives and the Gaztetxea youth centre. The journal's director is Nerea Cubillo Urkizu, and around 20 writers contribute to the editorial work. Collaborators include local schools and organisations such as Deustuko Eskola, Deustuko Ikastola, Ibarrekolanda BHI, Intxixu Ikastola and Deustuko Gazte Lokala. Photographs appearing in the monthly are taken by Ecuador Etxea. The physical magazine is free and the digital edition can be read at no cost on Uriola. Readers may also support the publication through a subscription of €25 per year, which brings the journal to their home each month. Prest! reaches some 2,700 homes in Bilbao's District 1 every month, and copies are also available in Deustualdea ikastolas, libraries, shops, euskaltegis (Basque-language schools) and bars. The publication's 233rd issue appeared in March 2022. Prest! is a member of Tokikom, a network of Basque-language local media that today comprises 76 outlets. Its main sponsors are Deustualdea associations such as Bihotz Alai Dantza Taldea, Deustu Arraun Taldea, Elorri Bertso Eskola, Deustuko Jai Batzordea and S.D. Deusto, while it receives institutional support from the Bizkaia Provincial Council and Bilbao City Council.

It is currently published by BLB Komunikazioa Kooperatiba Elkartea, a cooperative that also produces the Bilbao digital news outlet Uriola, and is printed by Antza Komunikazio Grafikoak. Prest! is a member of Tokikom, a network of Basque-language local media that today comprises 76 outlets. The journal's director is Nerea Cubillo Urkizu, and around 20 writers take part in its editorial work.
