Overview
PresseClub München e. V. is a voluntary association in Germany whose network involves around 1,000 journalists, press officers and media professionals. It offers journalists roughly 300 service events per year, including press talks, panel discussions, workshops and journalist tours, and runs a mentoring programme for young talent. It publishes the PresseClub-Magazin, a media magazine for journalists, media professionals and decision-makers in politics, science, culture and society, and rents out representative rooms above Marienplatz for press conferences. Founded on 16 March 1950 under the founding name "Verein Auswärtige Presse", it first met at Lenbachplatz, later moved to the Regina-Palast-Hotel, and in 1958 settled in the Peterhof at Marienplatz. It also awards the Herwig-Weber-Preis.
History
PresseClub München was founded on 16 March 1950 under the founding name "Verein Auswärtige Presse". It initially met at Lenbachplatz, later moved to the Regina-Palast-Hotel, and in 1958 settled in the Peterhof at Marienplatz, with a direct view of the Munich city hall. Since its founding, numerous prominent figures from politics, business, culture and sport have visited the Munich PresseClub. In February 1969 Dr. Herwig Weber, Munich correspondent of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and chairman of the PresseClub München since 1961, died; in his memory the club endowed a prize for apt journalistic portrayals of Munich in words, sound and images. The first award ceremony took place on 22 November 1973 in the Great Assembly Hall of the city hall, and the Herwig-Weber-Preis was thereafter awarded there every two years. In 1992 the state capital Munich first awarded its own journalism prize, which, unlike the Herwig-Weber-Preis for individual articles, broadcasts or series, is given for a lifetime achievement.
