Overview
Prayon is a Belgian group specialised in phosphorus chemistry, headquartered in Belgium and tracing its industrial roots to the 19th century. The company describes itself as a world reference in phosphoric acid production, with a heritage of more than 130 years of experience and a portfolio spanning phosphate and fluorine products, process technologies and industrial equipment. Its products are mostly intermediate and functional ingredients rather than consumer-facing goods: they are used as raw materials or processing aids in food, pet food, technical, horticultural, construction, personal care and health care applications. The group operates seven production sites, located in Belgium (Engis and Puurs), France (the Roches-de-Condrieu chemical platform), Switzerland (Bex) and the United States (Augusta and Herrin-Sesser). It also runs research and development centres in Belgium and a testing and validation facility, Technophos, in Bulgaria. Prayon employs approximately 1,500 people and reports a group turnover of about 1.1 billion euros. Its technologies are used in more than 130 phosphoric acid plants worldwide, and it is active in over 100 countries through local representative offices. Ownership is shared equally between two shareholders: the Moroccan group OCP and Wallonie Entreprendre (WE), a Belgian public investment body. This structure gives Prayon both a global phosphate-industry anchor and a regional Belgian industrial base. The company positions itself around innovation and sustainability, promoting its wet phosphoric acid process as using up to seven times less CO2 than the thermal route, and pursuing circular-economy approaches including phosphate recycling. Prayon's commercial offer combines specialty chemicals with engineering and equipment. It supplies phosphates for food and beverage processing, water and metal treatment, ceramics, fire-extinguisher powders, water-soluble fertilisers, oral care, pharmaceuticals and batteries, alongside technologies and equipment for phosphoric acid and fertiliser plants. The group's stated mission is 'Enriching daily life through phosphorus chemistry', and its vision is 'Our Technology makes the difference'.
History
Prayon's history reaches back to the early industrial development of the Liège region of Belgium. In 1828, the Société Métallurgique d'Engis was created to exploit zinc. In 1845 it became the Société de la Nouvelle Montagne, which, benefiting from the discovery of phosphate deposits in Hesbaye, also began manufacturing chemical fertilisers. In 1882 the company was transformed into the Société Métallurgique de Prayon and concentrated its activities on chemistry. This 1882 date is the origin of the group's claim to a heritage of more than 130 years in phosphorus chemistry. Over the 20th century the business evolved from metallurgy and fertiliser production into a specialist in phosphate chemistry. In 1982 it became the Société Chimique Prayon-Rupel, described in French-language sources as a world leader in the phosphates sector. The Prayon name and the Rupel name were thus combined in the corporate identity of the modern group. In the contemporary period, Prayon has consolidated around phosphate and fluorine chemistry, supplying intermediate products and process technologies rather than consumer brands. Its wet phosphoric acid process, developed in-house, became a worldwide reference and is used in more than 130 phosphoric acid plants. The group operates seven production sites in Belgium, France, Switzerland and the United States, maintains research and development centres in Belgium, and runs the Technophos testing and validation facility in Bulgaria. Ownership has also taken a distinctive shape. The Prayon Group is held equally by the Moroccan phosphate group OCP and by Wallonie Entreprendre (WE), a Belgian public investment entity, giving the company a dual anchor in the global phosphate industry and in the Walloon industrial ecosystem. With approximately 1,500 employees and a group turnover of about 1.1 billion euros, Prayon today presents itself as a technology-driven, sustainability-oriented chemical group whose mission is 'Enriching daily life through phosphorus chemistry'.
