Overview
Praktische Theologie (subtitled Zeitschrift für Praxis und Kirche, Gesellschaft und Kultur; abbreviated PrTh) is a German-language academic journal aimed at people working in parish ministry, education, schools, adult education, and social work. It addresses topics from the fields of religion and society, concrete problem areas from those professional fields, and themes from the humanities and social sciences that are relevant to shaping practice. Each issue contains a central theme with experiences, reports, and practical-theological as well as social-scientific analyses of various aspects of that theme. Historical background information, reviews, and literature reports complete each individual issue. The journal was founded in 1966 by the Mainz theology professor Gert Otto under the name Theologia Practica (subtitled Zeitschrift für Praktische Theologie und Religionspädagogik) and appeared from April 1966 in the Hamburg Furche-Verlag. The journal announced cooperation with the American journal Religious Education and the Dutch journal Wending. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung wrote that it was to be expected that the journal "would soon occupy an important place within theological journals." Later the journal appeared in the Christian Kaiser Verlag. With the transition of this publisher to the Gütersloher Verlagshaus in 1994, the name was changed to the current one. The editors (as of June 2024) are Tobias Braune-Krickau, Kristian Fechtner, Jan Hermelink, David Plüss, Uta Pohl-Patalong, Claudia Schulz, and Christopher Zarnow. The journal remains active and is published by the Gütersloher Verlagshaus, part of the Penguin Random House Verlagsgruppe.
