History

The area that would become Pozo del Molle was originally part of a larger tract known as 'La Leona' in the Calchín district of Río Segundo Department. On April 25, 1888, Bartolomé Firpo purchased a fraction of land measuring six and a half blocks east to west by thirty blocks south to north. In 1902, the French Santa Fe Railway Company extended its line connecting San Francisco with Villa María and needed to install a station on Firpo's fields, which it named 'Pozo del Molle'. Firpo agreed to donate the necessary land to the company and decided to lay out a town on the remaining land. The agreement was signed on March 29, 1903. The first train passed on April 4, 1904, a date considered the founding of Pozo del Molle. The town grew alongside the railway, initially supported by agricultural and livestock development, and later specifically by the dairy sector. Today its growth is based on agriculture, dairy production, dairy agro-industry, and the agricultural implement industry. The town is located in an important dairy basin and hosts the annual Expo Molle. The population was 5,203 in 2022, down from 5,680 in 2010. The town's ethnic composition includes descendants of Italians (mostly Piedmontese, some Lombards), Spaniards from Castile and León, criollos, and other Europeans who arrived directly from Europe or from the 'Pampa Gringa' colonies in Santa Fe Province after the Immigration and Colonization Law of 1876. The 'Casa Baudino' (later Cooperativa Agropecuaria Pozo del Molle Ltda.) was the first grain collection business and a large general store, founded by the Baudino family, Italian farmers, along with other traditional Italian families such as Mana, Mattio, Truccone, Mano, Mecchia, Melano, Celada, and others, who formed a community based on agriculture, initially dedicated to wheat harvesting. The Museo y Archivo Histórico Municipal Pablo Recla has operated in the old train station since 1986 and holds over 10,000 donated items in nine rooms.
