Overview
Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics (Ukrainian: «Порошкова металургія») is an international monthly scientific and technical journal published in Kyiv, Ukraine. It is one of the most authoritative periodicals in its field in Ukraine and has a broad geography of authors and readers. The journal was founded in January 1961 by the Institute of Metal Ceramics and Special Alloys of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, on the initiative of I. M. Frantsevych. Its founding institution later became the I. M. Frantsevych Institute for Problems of Materials Science of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which remains the publisher and founder. The journal covers the theory and technology of producing powders, pressure working of porous semi-finished products, production and study of the properties of materials based on metal powders, refractory compounds and ceramics, the fundamentals of the theory and technology of coating deposition, the production and study of the properties of fibrous and highly porous dispersion-strengthened and reinforced materials, functionally graded and layered powder-based materials, nanostructured materials, and heterogeneous equilibria in multicomponent systems. Articles published in the journal address powder metallurgy broadly: problems of the theory and technology of obtaining powders, pressure treatment of porous semi-finished products, obtaining and investigating the properties of materials based on metal powders, refractory compounds and ceramics, the basics of the theory and technology of applying coatings, obtaining and studying the properties of fibrous and highly porous dispersion-strengthened and reinforced, functionally graded and layered powder-based materials, nanostructured materials, and the study of heterogeneous equilibria in multicomponent systems. The journal is published monthly and is also republished in English by Springer under the title "Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics." Its ISSNs are 1068-1302 (print version) and 1573-9066 (electronic version). The editorial team has included prominent materials scientists, and the international editorial council includes members from France, Israel, Germany, Canada, Armenia, the USA, Slovakia, Serbia and Montenegro, Poland, Russia, and Belarus. The editor-in-chief listed in the official journal information is Yu. M. Solonin, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Professor. The deputy editor-in-chief is M. S. Kovalchenko, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, and the responsible secretary of the editorial office is T. A. Malyshevska. The editorial board includes G. A. Baglyuk, M. V. Bulanova, O. D. Vasyliev, M. P. Gadzira, O. I. Hetman, Yu. G. Gogotsi, O. V. Dudnik, I. Yu. Zavalii, O. B. Zgalat-Lozynskyi, V. I. Ivashchenko, M. V. Karpets, V. P. Krasovskyi, L. M. Kulikov, and P. I. Loboda, among others. A Ukrainian Wikipedia article on the journal lists V. V. Skorokhod as editor-in-chief, with M. S. Kovalchenko as deputy and T. A. Malyshevska as responsible secretary, and lists editorial board members including G. G. Gnesin, A. G. Kostornov, V. A. Lavrenko, L. M. Lopato, O. D. Neiko, Yu. N. Podrezov, A. V. Ragulya, G. G. History
The journal «Порошкова металургія» (Powder Metallurgy) was founded in January 1961 by the Institute of Metal Ceramics and Special Alloys of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, on the initiative of I. M. Frantsevych. The institute itself traces its origins to 1952, when a Department of Physical Chemistry of Metallurgical Processes led by I. M. Frantsevych existed within the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In November–December 1952, on the basis of that department, an independent Laboratory of Special Alloys of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR was created, and it was given the territory of the semi-ruined economic courtyard of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. The laboratory conducted fundamental research and development of materials with high heat resistance, heat strength, and erosion resistance, including with extensive use of powder metallurgy methods. In 1955 the laboratory was reorganized into the Institute of Metal Ceramics and Special Alloys of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. From 1964 it has been named the Institute for Problems of Materials Science. I. M. Frantsevych was director of the institute from the day of its organization until 1973; he was an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1961) and a Hero of Socialist Labor of the USSR (1969). The journal was established as a specialized scientific and technical periodical to publish research in powder metallurgy and related materials science. Over the decades it has become one of the most authoritative journals in Ukraine in its field, with a wide geography of authors and readers. It is published monthly. The English-language edition, titled "Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics," is published by Springer, with ISSN 1068-1302 (print) and ISSN 1573-9066 (electronic). The journal's editorial leadership has included prominent Ukrainian materials scientists. The official journal information lists Yu. M. Solonin as editor-in-chief, M. S. Kovalchenko as deputy editor-in-chief, and T. A. Malyshevska as responsible secretary. The Ukrainian Wikipedia article on the journal lists V. V. Skorokhod as editor-in-chief, with M. S. Kovalchenko as deputy and T. A. Malyshevska as responsible secretary. The editorial board and international editorial council have included members from Ukraine, France, Israel, Germany, Canada, Armenia, the USA, Slovakia, Serbia and Montenegro, Poland, Russia, and Belarus, reflecting the journal's international scope. The journal continues to be published by the I. M. Frantsevych Institute for Problems of Materials Science of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Its content spans the theory and technology of powder production, pressure working of porous semi-finished products, materials based on metal powders, refractory compounds and ceramics, coating deposition, fibrous and highly porous dispersion-strengthened and reinforced materials, functionally graded and layered powder-based materials, nanostructured materials, and heterogeneous equilibria in multicomponent systems.
