Overview
Postoj (full name Konzervatívny denník Postoj, "Conservative Daily Postoj") is a Slovak online conservative daily newspaper. It was founded in 2015 in reaction to the public debate surrounding Slovakia's 2015 referendum on the family. The publication covers politics, economics, culture, religion and social issues, and is a member of the Association of Print and Digital Media (Asociácia tlačených a digitálnych médií). The project grew out of an earlier online magazine, Postoy.sk, which was launched on 1 June 2005 and whose founding editor-in-chief was Matúš Demko. In January 2015 Postoy.sk published a series of articles by Terézia Rončáková analysing media coverage of the referendum, and on 16 February 2015 it issued an appeal titled "Vytvorme konzervatívny denník" ("Let's create a conservative daily"), authored by Lukáš Melicher, arguing that no major Slovak daily, weekly or television represented a conservative worldview. The appeal was accompanied by the launch of a new website, konzervativnydennik.sk, and a crowdfunding campaign. In June 2015 the project announced three new staffers — Jaroslav Daniška, Jozef Majchrák and Martin Hanus — who left the weekly .týždeň to join. The new daily finally launched under the name Postoj on 17 September 2015 with František Múčka as editor-in-chief. Postoj is published by the company POSTOJ MEDIA, founded in March 2017. Its co-owners from the outset were Lukáš Melicher and the civic association Postoj; in 2022 the civic association became the sole owner. The civic association Postoj (originally named Postoy) was established in May 2014. In December 2025 Peter Balberčák became the statutory representative of both POSTOJ MEDIA and the civic association, succeeding Lukáš Melicher, and he also chairs the association's board. The editor-in-chief is Martin Hanus, with Imrich Gazda and Jozef Majchrák as his deputies. Editorially, Postoj has seen notable turnover. In March 2020 key editor Jaroslav Daniška left after the management offered him a fee he considered inappropriately low; he later co-founded the daily Štandard with Peter Núñez. In July 2022 Dag Daniš moved to Štandard after two years at Postoj. In May 2020 Martin Hanus replaced František Múčka as editor-in-chief. The publication's founding was itself controversial: the predecessor Postoy.sk was criticised by other media for how it covered the 2015 family referendum, and the launch drew reactions from figures such as .týždeň editor Štefan Hríb and Konzervatívny výber publisher Milan Krajniak. Postoj continues to operate as an online daily, publishing news, commentary and analysis for a Slovak readership.
History
Postoj's origins lie in the online magazine Postoy.sk, launched on 1 June 2005, whose founder and first editor-in-chief was Matúš Demko. The magazine focused on topics with a Christian undertone. In January 2015 Postoy.sk published a series of articles by Terézia Rončáková analysing media communication around Slovakia's 7 February 2015 referendum on the family; she argued that all examined media were opinionated against the referendum and that, in the week studied, none except Postoy presented it positively. The daily Denník N criticised Rončáková's methodology as distorting, and its editor Filip Struhárik commented that the debate could have looked better if Slovakia had more quality conservative journalists and media. On 16 February 2015 Postoy.sk published an appeal titled "Vytvorme konzervatívny denník" ("Let's create a conservative daily"), authored by Lukáš Melicher, which built on those articles. Melicher argued that among significant Slovak dailies, weeklies and televisions there was not a single medium representing a conservative worldview, and that such a worldview was instead being fought against. The missing conservative voice on the Slovak media scene was thus the main reason for founding the daily. Melicher, however, ruled out closer cooperation on the daily with the Alliance for the Family (Aliancia za rodinu), which had received more space on Postoy.sk during the referendum campaign than opponents of the referendum. Postoy.sk also faced criticism from several media for the way it reported on the referendum. On the day the appeal was published, Postoy.sk also launched a new website, konzervativnydennik.sk, and announced a crowdfunding collection. In June 2015 the project announced three new editors who left the editorial team of .týždeň because of Postoj: Jaroslav Daniška, Jozef Majchrák and Martin Hanus. The reasons for their departure were said to be opinion disagreements with the .týždeň editorial team, as well as the closeness of the idea of a conservative daily to the so-called family referendum. The new conservative daily finally appeared under the name Postoj on 17 September 2015 with František Múčka as editor-in-chief; Múčka had previously worked at the weeklies TREND and .týždeň and at the daily SME. Former spokesperson of the Alliance for the Family (until April 2015) Peter Kremský was also involved in the preparatory phases but left the project before launch. Reactions to the founding were mixed. .týždeň editor-in-chief Štefan Hríb said the departure of Daniška, Majchrák and Hanus saddened him but he also saw it as a useful challenge, and responded to their statements that .týždeň was too liberal for them by saying that if they really considered this liberal, then their new conservative daily was not starting well. Milan Krajniak, at the time publisher of the portal Konzervatívny výber (KV), founded in 2015, wrote that KV had arisen similarly to Postoj in reaction to media manipulations by liberal media before the February family referendum, and that he did not see the new internet daily Postoj as competition but as an ally and partner. According to Miroslava Kernová, KV reached the level of conspiracy and pro-Russian websites in 2016. In later years the editorial team changed. In March 2020 one of the key editors, Jaroslav Daniška, left the daily after management offered him continued cooperation for a fee he considered inappropriately low; Daniška later founded the daily Štandard with Peter Núñez. In July 2022 Dag Daniš also moved to Štandard after two years at Postoj. In May 2020 Martin Hanus replaced Múčka as editor-in-chief. In December 2025 Peter Balberčák became the statutory representative of POSTOJ MEDIA and the civic association Postoj, succeeding Lukáš Melicher. The publisher of Postoj is the company POSTOJ MEDIA, founded in March 2017. From its founding, its co-owners were Lukáš Melicher and the civic association Postoj, and in 2022 the civic association Postoj became its sole owner. In December 2025 Peter Balberčák became the statutory representative of POSTOJ MEDIA, replacing Lukáš Melicher in that position. The civic association Postoj (originally Postoy) was established in May 2014, and in December 2025 Balberčák also succeeded Melicher as its statutory representative; he is also the chairman of its board.
