Overview
Post Brauerei Weiler und Siebers-Quelle Anton Zinth is a private brewery and mineral-water company based in Weiler im Allgäu in the Bavarian Allgäu region of southern Germany. Its brewing tradition is traced by the company and local historians to 1650, and the establishment that became the brewery was elevated in 1852 to the status of a Königlich Bayerische Posthalterei und Brauerei (Royal Bavarian postal station and brewery). The business has been in the hands of the Zinth family since 1907, when the young brewmaster Anton Zinth sen. arrived in Weiler and took over the small Post Brauerei together with its inn and agricultural land. Today the company operates as Post Brauerei Weiler u. Siebers-Quelle Anton Zinth GmbH & Co. KG, combining a regional brewery with the Siebers mineral spring, the only state-recognized mineral spring owned by a brewery in the region. The brewery produces a range of beers under the protected PostBier brand, including bottom-fermented and top-fermented styles such as its PostEdel lager and wheat beer, brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Alongside brewing, the company bottles mineral water from the Siebersquelle, a spring first tapped in 1428 and drawn from a tertiary rock layer about 160 meters below ground. The brewery's historic Stammhaus, the former post inn in Weiler, was extensively renovated and has been run since 2010 as a Bräustüble (brewery tavern) with hotel operations, giving the company a hospitality arm that complements its beverage production. Distribution is regional, spanning the Allgäu Alps, the Lake Constance area and Upper Swabia. The company positions itself as a medium-sized, quality- and region-focused family brewery, emphasizing freshness, local ties and traditional Bavarian brewing craft. It offers brewery tours, beer tastings and a beer symposium led by beer sommelier Tanja Wolfbauer, and it maintains a Bräustüble and hotel at its historic site. Leadership has passed through four generations of the Zinth family. After Anton Zinth sen., his sons Herbert Zinth sen. and Anton Zinth jun. led the business; Herbert Zinth jun. joined management in the late 1980s and took over as managing partner in 2008, modernizing production facilities and the Stammhaus. In the 2020s Sebastian Zinth, a brewmaster and industrial engineer, joined the management in the fourth generation, succeeding his father Herbert Zinth II, who had led the Allgäu private brewery and its Siebers mineral spring for more than three decades.
History
The brewing tradition of Weiler im Allgäu is traced by the company and local historian Ludwig Scheller to 1650. Over the centuries the brewery sites and names in Weiler changed; in the 19th century today's Postbrauerei emerged. In 1849 the name "Zur Post" first appeared, the inn with brewery having previously been called "Weißes Rössle." In 1852 the brewery and inn led by Josef Anton Wucher were elevated to a Königlich Bayerische Posthalterei und Brauerei (Royal Bavarian postal station and brewery). In 1904 the inn at Fridolin-Holzer-Straße 4 was acquired by Jakob Huber and rebuilt and expanded by Georg Bufler as the "Hotel Post"; the side wing on Bahnhofstraße was demolished in 1904/1905, an additional storey with a new flatter roof was added, and the facade was adapted in harmonious Jugendstil to the overall complex of the station quarter. On the eastern green area Bufler built the Salettl, an elongated garden pavilion with two pagoda roofs. In 1906 the brewmaster Anton Zinth sen. (1880–December 1961) came to Weiler and in October 1907 took over the then-local brewery with inn and agriculture. Initially alone, later together with his eldest son Herbert Zinth sen. (1914–1989), he expanded the operation into a medium-sized enterprise of regional importance between the Allgäu Alps and Lake Constance. The brewing operation was moved 300 meters further north to Käsgasse 17. In 1926 Georg Bufler expanded the Stammhaus using the old malthouse and the post station, and rebuilt it; the Salettl he had built in 1904 was demolished again. In 1961 the second son Anton Zinth jun. also joined management, who today leads the operation together with Herbert Zinth jun. After extensive renovations the Stammhaus has been run since 2010 as a Braustüberl and hotel. The Post Brauerei Weiler, with the Siebersquelle, is the only brewery in the region to have a state-recognized mineral spring. The Siebersquelle was first tapped in 1428. The spring's capture lies in the tertiary rock layer at a depth of 160 meters. The Post Brauerei Weiler acquired a stake in the spring in the mid-20th century and has been its sole owner since 1989. In the late 1980s Herbert Zinth jun. joined management as the third generation. In 2008 he took over as managing partner the leadership of the brewery with its Siebers mineral spring. With economic skill and great inventiveness he brought the production facilities and the brewery's buildings and grounds to a modern and representative standard. The brewery's Stammhaus, the Post in Weiler, also experienced a renaissance: it was renovated and modernized and is run by the brewery itself as a Bräustüble with hotel operations. In the 2020s Sebastian Zinth, a brewmaster and industrial engineer, joined the management in the fourth generation at age 30, succeeding his father Herbert Zinth II, who had led the Allgäu private brewery with its Siebers mineral spring for more than three decades.
