Overview

Positivo Tecnologia is a Brazilian technology company headquartered in Curitiba, Paraná. Established in 1989 as Positivo Informática, it initially existed to manufacture and supply computers for schools operated by Grupo Positivo and for institutions using the group’s educational system. It subsequently expanded from an education-focused computer supplier into a diversified technology manufacturer and services provider serving retail consumers, corporations, schools, public institutions, and other organizations. Its portfolio includes desktop computers, notebooks, all-in-one computers, tablets, smartphones and other mobile phones, servers, payment machines, smart-home and smart-office equipment, electronic-security systems, educational platforms, and specialized technology projects. The company also provides equipment leasing, managed information-technology services, technical support, and mobility-related services. Its business is therefore broader than a conventional consumer-electronics brand: Positivo combines branded hardware, licensed and partner brands, contract manufacturing, public-sector projects, infrastructure, and recurring technology services. Positivo entered the broader commercial computer market during the 1990s and 2000s. It began supplying companies and public institutions through tenders in 1990, created a dedicated educational-technology division in 1994, and introduced educational portals for private and public schools in 2000 and 2001. Retail expansion began in 2004, followed by a stronger presence in corporate computing, including desktops, notebooks, and servers. In 2006 the company became publicly traded on the Brazilian exchange, and in 2007 it reported sales of 1.389 million personal computers, making it one of the largest desktop manufacturers globally at that time. The company broadened its manufacturing footprint with a Manaus factory in 2008 and later developed production and operating capabilities outside Brazil. Its international activity has included Argentina, Chile, Kenya, Rwanda, China, and Taiwan, with Taiwan and China also supporting its Asian presence and supply-chain relationships. Mobile phones became part of the portfolio in 2012, while tablets and additional computer categories followed. The company has used a mixture of its own brands, licenses, partnerships, and acquisitions, including Quantum, VAIO notebooks in Brazil, 2A.M. gaming computers, Compaq, Infinix, and other technology businesses. In 2017, the corporate name changed from Positivo Informática to Positivo Tecnologia to reflect the widening scope of the business. Later initiatives added payment terminals, healthcare-related technology, security and automation, managed services, and technical support. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Positivo participated in efforts to expand Brazilian production capacity for Magnamed ventilators. It also won public tenders to manufacture electronic voting machines for Brazil’s 2022 and 2024 elections. The company’s current structure includes business lines and brands associated with Positivo, Positivo Casa Inteligente, Positivo Servers & Solutions, PositivoSEG, Positivo as a Service, Positivo Tech Services, VAIO, Infinix, and educational technology. In 2023 it established PositivoSEG and acquired SecuriCenter, while in 2024 it announced the acquisition of Algar Tech MSP, the managed-services unit of Algar Tech. Positivo Tecnologia is positioned as a broad Brazilian technology platform combining accessible consumer products with institutional, educational, infrastructure, security, and managed-service offerings.

History

Positivo Tecnologia was founded in 1989 under the name Positivo Informática. Its original role was closely connected to Grupo Positivo’s education business: the company manufactured and sold computers for the group’s schools and for other schools using its educational system. In 1990 it began supplying computers and information-technology equipment to companies and public institutions, including through competitive public tenders. This early combination of education, institutional customers, and hardware manufacturing shaped the company’s later business model. In 1994, Positivo created an educational-technology division that developed software for schools and retail customers. The division later introduced the Portal Educacional for private schools in 2000 and the Aprende Brasil Portal for public schools in 2001. These initiatives gave the company a role in educational content and digital services in addition to equipment manufacturing. Positivo entered the retail computer market in 2004 and expanded its corporate portfolio in 2005 with desktops, notebooks, and servers. That year it reported having produced more than 500,000 computers for the corporate segment. The company became publicly traded in 2006 and joined the Brazilian market’s differentiated corporate-governance and tag-along indices identified as IGC and ITAG. It also received recognition in Brazilian business and consumer surveys. In 2007, Positivo reported sales of 1.389 million personal computers and reached leadership in Brazil’s national computer market. It opened an office in Taipei during the same period, supporting its international and supply-chain development. A factory in Manaus, Amazonas, opened in 2008, strengthening Brazilian manufacturing capacity. Positivo began a more explicit internationalization process in 2011 through a relationship with BGH in Argentina and Uruguay. It entered the mobile-phone market in 2012 and opened an office in Shenzhen, China, in 2013. In 2014, it began manufacturing tablets and computers in Rwanda, Africa. The brand and portfolio continued to diversify: the company launched Quantum smartphones in 2015, obtained a license to produce and sell VAIO notebooks in Brazil, and acquired a 50% interest in healthcare-technology company Hi Technologies in 2016. In 2017, the company changed its name to Positivo Tecnologia to reflect its expansion beyond traditional personal computers. It also expanded into Africa, including Kenya, and inaugurated Boreo Indústria de Componentes in Manaus for motherboard production. In 2018 it introduced the 2A.M. gaming-computer brand in Brazil, expanded Quantum operations to Argentina and Chile, and acquired 80% of Accept. In 2019, Positivo partnered with MindCET, the Government of Amazonas, and the Amazonas Court of Justice on initiatives intended to accelerate startups and extend educational technology to low-connectivity environments. The 2020 period brought both public-sector opportunities and pandemic-related production activity. Positivo participated in a task force to increase production capacity for Magnamed ventilators in Brazil and won a tender to manufacture electronic voting machines for the 2022 elections. In 2021, it licensed and incorporated Compaq operations in Brazil, partnered with Transsion Holdings’ Infinix brand, launched the Infinix Note 10 Pro, and entered payment-machine collaborations with Stone and NEXGO. It also won a tender connected with electronic voting machines for the 2024 elections. The company was elected to the council of the Distributed Management Task Force, an international technology-industry organization. In 2022, Positivo launched Positivo Tech Services for corporate technology services and support. In 2023, it created PositivoSEG for business automation and electronic security and acquired SecuriCenter. In May 2024, Positivo announced the acquisition of Algar Tech MSP, expanding its managed-services capabilities. The company now operates across consumer electronics, education, enterprise infrastructure, payment technology, smart devices, security, leasing, and technical services, with factories in Ilhéus and Manaus and international activity in several countries.
