Portfolium
An academic social networking and digital portfolio platform connecting university students and recent graduates with employers.

History
Portfolium originated in Adam Markowitz’s experience as a recent university graduate seeking to distinguish himself from other applicants. After finding that conventional applications did not adequately communicate his capabilities, Markowitz assembled a portfolio showing projects and activities completed at the University of California, San Diego. That portfolio helped him obtain work connected with NASA’s space shuttle program and became the conceptual basis for a platform that would let students present academic achievements in a visual, project-centered format. Markowitz founded Portfolium in San Diego in 2014. Rather than treating a résumé as the principal record of a candidate’s abilities, the company proposed a social networking service in which users could build profiles containing media and evidence of their work. Images, PDF documents, videos, and other files could be attached to academic projects and activities. The service was particularly suited to engineering and STEM students, whose coursework often produced tangible technical work, although it was intended for students and graduates from a broad range of disciplines. The startup joined the Evonexus ecosystem through the four-month Evostart accelerator program. It raised $900,000 in seed funding in the summer of 2014, substantially exceeding its initial $250,000 goal. Portfolium also received a $10,000 prize from the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation as one of 15 selected companies viewed as having potential for global expansion. Institutional distribution became central to the company’s strategy. Portfolium first engaged the alumni association at UC San Diego, where the concept received positive feedback. It then reached an agreement with California State University San Marcos, enabling members of the institution’s student and alumni population to register on the service. The company subsequently signed a contract with the University of California system to power accounts for students and alumni at all nine undergraduate campuses. These arrangements gave Portfolium a route to large, authenticated academic communities rather than relying solely on individual consumer adoption. Another significant relationship was formed with California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Under that arrangement, students were placed in a dedicated institutional network with additional capabilities, including communication between groups and the ability to connect work to the university community. Portfolium was selected after Cal Poly students compared several ePortfolio products in a benchmark exercise and chose it unanimously. The service combined portfolio creation with career networking. Students and recent graduates could publish project evidence for employers, while hiring organizations could use the platform to find early-career candidates. An iOS application extended the service to mobile users and supported job applications by allowing academic work to be placed before hiring managers, including through hashtags associated with prospective employers. Companies cited as users of Portfolium for student and graduate recruitment included SpaceX, Qualcomm, and Boeing. By August 2015, Portfolium reported availability beyond the United States, including Spain, Mexico, and Argentina. Its international reach remained part of a broader effort to connect academic achievement with employment opportunities. In 2019, Instructure acquired Portfolium. The transaction brought the platform into the wider education technology environment surrounding Instructure and its learning products. The supplied material does not document subsequent rebranding, product discontinuation, or the current independence of the Portfolium service; therefore, the brand’s present status is not determined here.
