History
Portakabin was founded in 1961, when the vision for ready-built, easily-transportable buildings became reality with the development of the first portable building model, the PK16. The company describes itself as an immediate success due to the uniqueness and innovation of its products, and it began its UK footprint and expansion into Europe in the 1970s, gathering many awards along the way. In the 1970s it saw steady growth and expansion across Europe, as well as sales from Beijing to Belize, and won the Queen's Award for Export Achievement. In the 1980s it was awarded a BBA (British Board of Agrément) certificate confirming compliance with permanent building standards for its Instant Building Module, the first to be awarded for a building module system. In the 1990s it won another Queen's Award. The company now employs more than 2000 people across ten European countries and operates three dedicated manufacturing facilities across Europe.
