Overview

The Polish Parasitological Society (Polish: Polskie Towarzystwo Parazytologiczne, PTP) is a Polish scientific society dedicated to the promotion and development of parasitology. It was founded on May 16, 1948, during the First Congress of Polish Parasitologists, held at the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine of the Medical Academy in Gdańsk. Professor Zbigniew Kozar was the founder of the Society, and Professor Jerzy Morzycki served as its first president. The Society's stated aims include developing various fields of parasitology, popularizing parasitological issues in society, and cooperating with state and public institutions in combating human and animal parasites. It also represents parasitology and parasitologists in scientific bodies such as the committees of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The Society is organized into 11 local branches and three scientific sections: general, medical, and veterinary parasitology. It has more than 300 members. Its main activities include organizing scientific meetings and conferences of an informational, reporting, and problem-oriented nature; conducting activities to popularize parasitology as a science through public lectures, courses, exhibitions, and presentations; announcing scientific competitions and awarding prizes; maintaining specialized museums and libraries; and cooperating with government administration, public organizations, and Polish and foreign scientific institutions to fulfill its statutory goals. Since 1954, the Society has published a quarterly scientific journal, Annals of Parasitology, formerly known as Wiadomości Parazytologiczne. In 1955, the Main Board initiated a publishing series entitled Parasitological Monographs, and in 1971 a second series, the Catalogue of the Parasitic Fauna of Poland, was launched. To date, twenty volumes of Parasitological Monographs and nine parts of the Catalogue have been published. During PTP meetings, held every three years, the Society awards distinctions and prizes commemorating outstanding Polish parasitologists. These include the Konstanty Janicki Medal for exceptional contributions to Polish parasitology, the Witold Stefański Award for original and outstanding publications in general, veterinary, or medical parasitology by young scientists, and the title of Honorary Member of the PTP, conferred upon individuals who have made exceptional contributions to parasitology, particularly Polish parasitology. The Society actively cooperates with international scientific organizations and is a member of the World Federation of Parasitologists and the European Federation of Parasitologists. Its list of honorary members includes outstanding Russian scientists: Konstantin Skryabin, Evgeny Pavlovsky, and Konstantin Ryzhikov. The current president is Dr. Agnieszka Perec-Matysiak, PhD, DSc, of the Department of Parasitology, University of Wrocław. The board also includes vice-presidents Dr. Katarzyna Goździk, Dr. Jacek Karamon, and Dr. Beata Szostakowska, secretary Dr. Joanna Hildebrand, and treasurer Dr. Dagmara Dyczko. Current information about the Society's activities is published on its website, www.ptparasit.org.pl.
