The Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in Canada (Polish: Polski Instytut Naukowy w Kanadzie; French: Institut polonais des arts et des sciences au Canada) is a Montreal-based learned society and cultural institution founded in 1943 by the Polish historian Oskar Halecki and Wanda Stachiewicz. It was originally established as the Canadian section of the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in America, headquartered in New York, and became an autonomous institution in 1976. Its motto is "Nauka, Wiedza, Kultura" (Learning, Knowledge, Culture). The Institute brings together researchers, scientists, artists and members of the liberal professions. Its stated purpose is to make Polish achievements in these fields known to the Canadian public through conferences, symposia, exhibitions, interviews, concerts, recitals and publications. Wilder Penfield, the renowned Montreal neurosurgeon, served as its first president and was one of its founding members, alongside academics from McGill University, the Université de Montréal, Université Laval, the Royal Society of Canada and other Canadian institutions. A Polish Library (Bibliothèque polonaise) was founded alongside the Institute in 1943 by Wanda Stachiewicz and has been housed since its creation in premises at McGill University. The Institute is sometimes referred to jointly as the "Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in Canada and Polish Library." It remains an active, non-profit scholarly and cultural organization based in Montreal.
