Overview
Pogačnik's Lodge on Kriški podi (Slovene: Pogačnikov dom na Kriških podih) is a mountain lodge situated at 2050 metres on the Kriški podi karst plateau in the Julian Alps of Slovenia. It stands above the Zadnjica valley and is one of the most visited high-mountain lodges in the country. The lodge is owned and managed by the Radovljica Mountaineering Society (PD Radovljica). The lodge was built by PD Radovljica beginning in 1948 and opened on 7 October 1951. It is named after Jože Pogačnik, then vice-president of the Slovenian Mountaineering Association and head of its economic commission, who was the initiator of the lodge's construction and died in an accident in Mlinarica while on his way to the opening. Over the decades the lodge has been expanded and modernised: a wing with sanitary facilities, washrooms and a laundry was added in 1973 and the interior was renovated; a goods cableway from Zadnjica was installed in 1983 and renewed between 2001 and 2003; a bivouac with a winter room opened next to the lodge on 15 September 1985; GSM coverage arrived in 1993; and in 2004 the attic was renovated and the roof replaced. The lodge operates seasonally, typically from the end of June until 30 September. It offers 45 seats and a counter in the guest room, 37 beds in five rooms, and 22 places in three shared dormitories. Facilities include toilets, a washroom, running water, photovoltaic cells and a generator. The guest area is heated by a stove, and the winter room has 20 places and a small stove. The lodge is a popular starting point for climbs of nearby peaks such as Stenar (2501 m), Bovški Gamsovec (2392 m), Križ (2410 m), Razor (2601 m) and Škrlatica (2740 m). Access is on foot from Trenta via the Zadnjica valley (about 4 hours), from Aljažev dom in Vrata via Sovatna (about 4 hours), from Koča v Krnici via Kriška stena (about 4–5 hours), from Vršič (about 6–7 hours) and from Kranjska Gora via Krnica (about 6–7 hours). Reservations are recommended due to its popularity.
