Overview

Pneu Egger is a Swiss specialist tyre retail chain founded in 1949 by Hans Egger in St. Gallen. It grew into a nationwide network of garages and became the market leader in Swiss tyre retail, with around 40 branches and roughly 400 employees, generating approximately CHF 110 million in revenue in 2013. The company sells standard and specialty tyres for passenger cars as well as commercial and industrial vehicles, and also distributes aluminium wheels and accessories. Its service range includes mounting, balancing, tyre storage, wheel alignment, shock absorber, exhaust and battery services, plus a national tyre breakdown service for trucks and delivery vans. In 1962 the first branch was opened in the Telliquartier in Aarau, which later became the company headquarters, along with Switzerland's first retreading plant. Over the following two decades, under the operational leadership of Hans Hartmann, twelve more branches were opened. In 1982 Hans Hartmann bought the company and subsequently opened another 16 locations. In 1998 operational leadership passed to his son Gregor Hartmann. With effect from 26 May 2020, Pneu Egger AG was renamed CONTITRADE SCHWEIZ AG and merged with competitor Adam Touring GmbH, which had already belonged to the Continental group since 1986. Both brands retained their independent appearances until 2022 and continued to sell third-party tyre brands. At the beginning of 2023, the branches of Adam Touring and Pneu Egger began a gradual conversion to the "BestDrive by Continental" brand. By resolution of the general meeting on 23 June 2023, CONTITRADE SCHWEIZ AG was renamed BestDrive Switzerland AG. Today the former Pneu Egger network operates as part of BestDrive by Continental, which describes itself as a regional partner for tyres and car services in Switzerland with over 60 branches. The BestDrive offering includes tyre and wheel changes, tyre purchase, vehicle checks, oil changes, rim services, air-conditioning service, wheel alignment, tyre storage and battery replacement, often with promotional tie-ins such as Coop Superpunkte loyalty points. The Pneu Egger name remains a well-known heritage brand in Swiss tyre retail.
