Overview

The Plattkofelhütte (Italian: Rifugio Sasso Piatto; Ladin: Utia de Sas Plat) is a private mountain hut located at 2,300 metres above sea level in the Dolomites, at the Fassajoch (Giogo di Fassa, 2,297 m), which connects the Seiser Alm with the Val Duron, a side valley of the Fassa Valley. It lies in the municipality of Campitello di Fassa in Trentino, Italy, just a few metres from the border with Kastelruth in South Tyrol. The hut takes its name from the Plattkofel (2,969 m), its local mountain, which rises immediately to the northeast and can be climbed via an easy path from the hut. The Plattkofelhütte is an important base for hikers exploring the Seiser Alm to the north and northwest, as well as the surrounding mountains. To the west, the Tierser-Alpl-Hütte lies below the Rosszähne, from where one can reach the Schlern and continue south into the Rosengarten group. To the northwest, a trail leads to the Langkofelhütte, making a complete circuit of the Langkofel group possible. Eastward, the Friedrich-August-Weg leads without significant elevation change to the Rifugio Sandro Pertini and on to the Friedrich-August-Hütte near the Sellajoch. The hut was built in the 1930s by Anton Kasseroler as accommodation for hikers and mountaineers, but had to close during the Second World War. In the 1950s, the hut—which had burned down during the war—was rebuilt, and in 1971 it was significantly expanded. In 2016, the sleeping facilities were renewed. Today, the Plattkofelhütte continues to operate as a private refuge, offering food, drink, and overnight accommodation to visitors. It is also a starting point for several via ferrata routes, including the Oskar-Schuster-Steig (difficulty B/C / 1+), the Maximilianweg (B), and the Laurenzi Klettersteig (D / 2-). The hut can be combined with other huts in the Rosengarten for multi-day tours.
