Overview
Planinsko rudarski dom na Kalu is a mountain hut on Kal, a southern spur of Mrzlica in the Posavsko hribovje region of Slovenia. It was first built as an emergency shelter by members of the Hrastnik Mountaineering Society (Planinsko društvo Hrastnik) after the Second World War and opened on 15 August 1948. Between 1957 and 1959 the society constructed a new post and opened it on 23 August 1959, renaming it a 'dom' (house). In April 1982 the Hrastnik Coal Mine (Rudnik Hrastnik) leased the house until the year 2000, added an annex, functionally connected it to the old building, and thoroughly renovated and modernised the original structure. The enlarged and renovated post, renamed Planinsko rudarski dom (Mountaineering and Mining House), was ceremonially opened on 29 November 1984. The house sits beside a forest at the edge of a broad mountain meadow. It offers three dining rooms with 120 seats, two bars, a terrace with 40 seats, 14 rooms with 67 beds, and a shared dormitory with 10 beds. Facilities include central heating, running water, electricity, telephone, washrooms and showers with hot and cold water, and toilets on the ground floor, upstairs, and in the rooms of the new annex. It is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 to 13:00 (bar only, kitchen closed), Fridays from 15:00 to 18:00, and Saturdays and Sundays from 7:00 to 18:00. Members of the mountaineering society receive a customary discount on overnight stays. The view from the house extends from the southeast to the west; to the north and east it is blocked by forest. To the southeast one can see Stražni hrib, behind it a little of Veliko Kozje, and more clearly Lisca, with the horizon reaching to Gorjanci; to the south is Kum, and southwest of it Snežnik, Veliki Javornik and Nanos appear on the horizon; to the west is the chain of peaks of the Posavsko hribovje up to Čemšeniška planina, Menina planina, behind it the Kamnik Alps, and in good visibility also the Julian Alps with Triglav. To the southwest, the nearby valleys of Hrastnik and Trbovlje are visible. The house is a facility of the Hrastnik Mountaineering Society and serves hikers, mountaineers, and visitors to the Posavsko hribovje.
