Overview

Planinski dom na Gori - Šentjungert is a mountain hut (planinski dom) in Slovenia, located just below the summit of Gora hill (also known as Šentjungert) in the hilly region bordering the lower Savinja Valley. The hut occupies a renovated former sexton's house (mežnarija) that stands slightly below the church of St. Kunigunde, a pilgrimage church built in the second half of the 14th century. The building was completely renovated in 1988, preserving its original appearance, and the mountain hut was ceremonially opened on 16 October 1988. It is operated by Planinsko društvo Galicija (Galicija Mountaineering Society), which was established in 2004 as a separate society from the mountain section of PD Žalec. The hut is open on Sundays and holidays from 9:00 onwards. It offers two dining rooms with 50 seats and 30 seats at tables in front of the hut. Facilities include an outdoor and indoor toilet, a washroom with cold water, and the main dining room is heated by a stove and electricity. The society also manages a renovated wooden house above the mountain hut. The site offers views of the hilly landscape towards Vojnik, Šentjur and Kozjansko to the east, Konjiška gora, Boč and Donačka gora to the north, and the Savinja Valley with Celje, Petrovče, Žalec and Šempeter on the left bank of the Savinja to the south.

History

The mountain hut is situated in a former sexton's house (mežnarija) that stands just below the church of St. Kunigunde on the summit of Gora hill. The church itself was built in the second half of the 14th century and is one of five churches in Slovenia dedicated to St. Kunigunde, the patron saint of children and pregnant women (feast day 3 March). In 1985, PD Žalec and its mountain group in Galicija decided to lease the sexton's house and renovate it into a mountain hut. The building was completely renovated in 1988, retaining its original appearance, and the mountain hut was ceremonially opened on 16 October 1988. In 2004, the mountain section at PD Žalec established its own independent Planinsko društvo Galicija, which took over the management of the hut. The society also manages a renovated wooden house above the mountain hut. The hut remains open on Sundays and holidays from 9:00 onwards, serving hikers and visitors to the church.
