Overview

Planinarski dom Kalnik is a mountain lodge situated on Mount Kalnik in central Croatia, at an elevation of 480 metres. It lies in the central part of the Kalnik mountain, near the medieval fortress Stari grad Veliki Kalnik. The lodge is accessible by asphalt road from the village of Kalnik, which is well connected by road to Križevci, Zagreb, Varaždin and Koprivnica. It can also be reached by bus or on foot via numerous hiking trails. The area around the lodge features about a hundred climbing routes. The lodge was built following an initiative in 1931 by Dr. Ivo Lipovšćak, then district prefect in Križevci, together with engineer Stjepan Planić. It was officially opened on Sunday, 23 June 1935. Since then, Kalnik has become a significant gathering place for hikers and excursionists. During World War II the lodge was closed and significantly damaged in combat; it was renovated in 1947 through the efforts of Professor Branko Jagar, Željko Kržek, Drago Zajac, Drago Volf and others. In spring 1957, reconstruction and construction of a new section began based on designs by engineer Stjepan Planić, with notable contributions from Ivo Pomper, Željko Kržek, Ivo Gerl and others. In 1962 the lodge was further improved with a large-capacity cistern and a reconstructed water supply network. In 1970, under the leadership of Emil Jelić, then head of the economic section, central heating was installed. The lodge has been well maintained to the present day. Today, Planinarski dom Kalnik operates a restaurant serving traditional local cuisine and offers 33 beds, arranged partly in group dormitories and partly in separate two-bed rooms. It is a well-known destination for hikers, climbers and day-trippers in the Koprivnica-Križevci County, and it serves as a base for exploring the Kalnik mountain and its historic fortress.

History

The idea to build a mountain lodge on Kalnik was initiated in 1931 in Križevci by Dr. Ivo Lipovšćak, then district prefect, together with engineer Stjepan Planić. The lodge was constructed and solemnly opened on Sunday, 23 June 1935. From that time, Kalnik became an important gathering place for hikers and excursionists. During World War II, the lodge was closed and suffered significant damage during combat. After the war, in 1947, it was renovated thanks to the dedicated efforts of Professor Branko Jagar, Željko Kržek, Drago Zajac, Drago Volf and others. In the spring of 1957, reconstruction and construction of a new section of the lodge began according to designs by engineer Stjepan Planić. Ivo Pomper, Željko Kržek, Ivo Gerl and others were particularly active in this work. A few years later, in 1962, the lodge was further improved: a large-capacity cistern was built and the water supply network was reconstructed. In 1970, thanks to Emil Jelić, then head of the economic section, and others, the reconstruction continued and central heating was installed. The lodge has been well maintained to the present day. Accommodation consists partly of group dormitories and partly of separate rooms with two beds each.
