History
Plan International's activities began in 1937, when a British journalist, John Langdon-Davies, together with his friend Eric Muggeridge, took in a five-year-old boy during the Spanish Civil War and founded the "Foster Parents Plan for Children in Spain," opening a facility for war orphans. During World War II the organization moved its bases between France and Britain and broadened its support to children of all nationalities and races. After the war, as Europe recovered, it shifted its field of activity to developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, and its form of activity moved from direct support to individual children toward improving the communities and living environments in which children live. In 1983 an office was established in Japan. In 1989 it was officially recognized and registered with the United Nations as a private organization engaged in development assistance. In 2002 Plan declared itself an international NGO that advances community development together with children, and the organization's name was changed to "Plan" while the title for supporters changed from "foster parent" to "sponsor." In 2007 it began publishing the "Because I am a Girl" / world girls report. In 2012 the organization's name was changed to "Plan International." Plan International Japan was founded in 1983 as the Foster Plan Japan office; in 1986 it was authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a foundation; in 1988 it was certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a specified public interest promoting corporation; in 2006 its name was changed from "Foster Plan" to "Plan Japan"; in 2011 it was authorized by the Cabinet Office as a public interest incorporated foundation; in 2016 its name was changed from "Plan Japan" to "Plan International"; and in 2023 it held an event commemorating its 40th anniversary.
