PKP Intercity

PKP Intercity is the long-distance passenger railway subsidiary of the PKP Group and one of the central brands in Poland's passenger-rail system. It was established in 2001 during the restructuring of the former state-owned Polish State Railways, when railway operations were separated into distinct companies and infrastructure management was placed in a different organizational structure. PKP Intercity operates intercity, express, overnight and international passenger services, connecting Poland's largest metropolitan areas with regional centers, smaller towns and major tourist destinations. In 2005, PKP Intercity introduced Tanie Linie Kolejowe, a lower-cost brand intended to make long-distance rail more accessible. The Pendolinos entered service on important corridors linking Warsaw with northern and southern Polish cities, including Gdańsk and Gdynia, Kraków and Katowice. On selected routes, they reduced journey times substantially; the Warsaw–Gdańsk journey, for example, was described as taking approximately two and a half hours. In regular service, the trains operate at lower speeds than their maximum capability where infrastructure and timetable conditions require it, although selected sections have supported scheduled speeds of up to 200 km/h. Fleet improvement continued in the late 2010s. PKP Intercity worked to add Wi-Fi to its rolling stock, reporting that 171 passenger cars and 40 combined sets had received the equipment by August 2018. In 2019, it ordered 12 eight-car Stadler Flirt electric multiple units with a 15-year maintenance period. These units added a modern regional-intercity vehicle type to the fleet, with both classes, a lounge-bar area and adaptations for passengers with reduced mobility. The company has also continued to invest in conventional passenger carriages. In 2024, PKP Intercity agreed with H. Cegielski–FPS on the delivery of 300 modern carriages, with an option for 150 additional vehicles. The planned cars are designed for speeds of up to 200 km/h and are intended to be authorized for operation in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania and Slovakia. This investment reflects the operator's need to renew a broad fleet serving both domestic routes and cross-border traffic. Today, PKP Intercity combines premium high-speed services, conventional intercity trains, lower-cost long-distance services and international connections. Its operating portfolio includes EIP, EIC, InterCity, TLK, EuroCity and EuroNight categories, alongside other international daytime and overnight services.
