Overview

The Pisciadùhütte (Italian: Rifugio Franco Cavazza al Pisciadù) is an Alpine mountain hut owned and operated by the Bologna section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI). It sits at 2,585 metres above sea level in a moon-like landscape in the northern Sella group, south of the Grödner Joch (Passo Gardena) in Italy, just above the small Pisciadù lake. The hut was built in 1902 by the Bamberg section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuOeAV) and opened on 20 August of that year; a small unstaffed shelter with only eight beds was inaugurated on 3 August 1903. After the First World War the Italian state expropriated the hut and handed it to the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT), which barely maintained it for lack of funds. Between 1934 and 1936 a private individual looked after the shelter, and in 1940 it was taken over and enlarged by the Bologna section. After the Second World War the CAI expanded the hut and began running it as a staffed refuge, with a further expansion in 1960. Today the Pisciadùhütte is a classic base for hikers and climbers in the Dolomites, reached in about 1½ hours from the Grödner Joch car park via the steep, wire-rope-protected scree gully Val Setus (marking no. 666), or in 2½ to 3 hours via the popular Pisciadù via ferrata (Via Ferrata Brigata Tridentina, difficulty C). It also serves as a stop on the transition to the Boèhütte (Rifugio Boè, 2,871 m) in about 2 hours, and a short walk leads to the intermittent glacier lake Lech dl Dragon. The hut is a commercial hospitality and mountaineering brand within the CAI network, offering food, drink and accommodation to visitors.

History

The Pisciadùhütte was built in 1902 by the Bamberg section of the Deutschen und Österreichischen Alpenvereins (DuOeAV) and opened on 20 August 1902. A year later, on 3 August 1903, a small unstaffed hut with only eight sleeping places was inaugurated. After the First World War, the Italian state expropriated the hut and transferred it to the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT), which, however, barely maintained it due to lack of funds. From 1934 to 1936 a private individual took care of the shelter, and in 1940 it was taken over and enlarged by the Bologna section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI). After the Second World War, the CAI expanded the hut and began to run it as a staffed refuge. In 1960 the hut was expanded again. The hut is located at 2,585 m above sea level in the northern Sella group, south of the Grödner Joch in Italy, just below the Pisciadù lake. It is reached from the Grödner Joch car park (2,121 m) via the steep, wire-rope-protected scree gully Val Setus (marking no. 666, red-white-red) in about 1½ hours; the last metres require some climbing skill. Alternatively, the medium-difficulty Pisciadù via ferrata (Via Ferrata Brigata Tridentina), often overcrowded due to its easy access from the Grödner Joch road, can be used (2½ to 3 hours; via ferrata equipment necessary; difficulty C). Over the Dolomite scree slopes in a westerly direction and towards the Gamsscharte, the Lech dl Dragon, a temporary glacier lake, is reached in about 15 minutes. The transition to the Boèhütte (Rifugio Boè, 2,871 m) takes about 2 hours. A book on the hut's 100th anniversary was published in 2001: I 100 anni del rifugio Franco Cavazza al Pisciadù (Club Alpino Italiano, Bologna, 2001).
