Overview

Pierce Manufacturing is an American manufacturer of fire apparatus and emergency vehicles, headquartered in Appleton, Wisconsin. Founded in 1913 by Humphrey Pierce, the company began as a small machine shop and grew into one of the largest builders of custom fire trucks in North America. Its product range covers custom and commercial pumpers, aerial ladders and platforms, tankers, heavy rescue vehicles, wildland and airport crash tenders, and specialty emergency vehicles, sold under the Pierce brand and built to individual department specifications. Pierce operates as a subsidiary of Oshkosh Corporation, the Wisconsin-based specialty vehicle group whose portfolio also includes Oshkosh defense and access equipment, JLG, and other commercial vehicle brands. Within Oshkosh, Pierce anchors the company's fire and emergency segment and is the group's best-known fire-apparatus nameplate. Pierce trucks are sold through a dealer network across the United States and Canada and exported to international markets, and the brand is closely associated with municipal and volunteer fire departments, airport rescue services, and industrial fire brigades. The brand's positioning rests on custom engineering, chassis integration, dealer service, and long product lifecycles rather than mass-market volume. Pierce has invested in its own chassis designs, aerials, and technology such as advanced pump systems and vehicle electronics, and it maintains a large service and parts business that supports apparatus over decades of use. Its Appleton facilities and Wisconsin manufacturing base are central to its identity as an American-built fire apparatus maker. Pierce is a business-to-business and public-sector brand: its customers are fire departments and agencies that procure apparatus through specification and bidding processes. The brand is therefore less visible to consumers than to the emergency-services community, where it is one of the most recognized names in North American fire apparatus alongside a handful of competitors. Ownership by a publicly traded parent gives it access to capital and shared engineering resources while keeping the Pierce name on the vehicles.

History

Pierce Manufacturing traces its origins to 1913, when Humphrey Pierce founded a machine shop in Appleton, Wisconsin. The business initially served local industrial and agricultural customers, and over the following decades it moved into the manufacture of fire apparatus, a natural extension of its metalworking and vehicle-building capabilities. Appleton remained the company's home, and the Pierce name became associated with hand-built, specification-driven fire trucks for Wisconsin and neighboring departments. Through the mid-20th century Pierce expanded its product line from basic pumpers into aerials, tankers, and rescue bodies, and it developed a dealer-based distribution model suited to a market where apparatus are purchased by individual fire departments through public procurement. Custom chassis and cab production became a distinguishing capability, allowing Pierce to control the complete vehicle rather than only the body mounted on a third-party chassis. A major turning point came in 1996, when Oshkosh Corporation (then Oshkosh Truck Corporation) acquired Pierce. The combination placed Pierce within a diversified specialty-vehicle group with defense, access equipment, and commercial truck businesses, giving the fire brand access to shared engineering, purchasing, and capital. Pierce became the anchor of Oshkosh's fire and emergency segment. In the 2000s and 2010s Pierce continued to invest in aerial technology, pump systems, and vehicle electronics, and it broadened its range to include wildland, airport rescue, and specialty vehicles. The company also built out its service and aftermarket business, reflecting the long service lives of fire apparatus and the importance of parts availability and dealer support to municipal customers. Oshkosh's fire and emergency segment, in which Pierce is the principal brand, has remained a stable part of the parent's portfolio, and Pierce vehicles continue to be built in Wisconsin and sold through a North American dealer network with international exports.
