Overview
Phamuang Command (Thai: กองกำลังผาเมือง; also rendered Phamuang Force) is one of the seven border protection forces of the Royal Thai Army. It is headquartered on Chotana Road in Chang Phueak sub-district, Mueang Chiang Mai district, Chiang Mai province. Its area of responsibility covers the Thai–Lao border across Phitsanulok, Uttaradit, Nan, Phayao and Chiang Rai provinces — about 584 km — and the Thai–Myanmar border across Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai provinces — about 349 km — for a combined frontier length of roughly 933 km. The force operates under the 3rd Army Area Operation Center (ศปก.ทภ.3) and simultaneously serves as the 2nd Forward Section of the Internal Security Operations Command, Region 3 (กอ.รมน.ภาค 3 สย.2). Its mission is border defense and sovereignty protection, suppression of narcotics trafficking along the frontier, and interdiction of illegal logging, arms smuggling, contraband goods, vehicle theft and illegal immigration by foreign workers. Phamuang Command was established in 1995, originally based at Camp Suriyaphong in Mueang Nan district, Nan province, with responsibility for only three provinces: Nan, Uttaradit and Phitsanulok. In 1999 the Army Operation Center assigned it additional responsibility for Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Phayao, and the headquarters moved to its present location in Chiang Mai. The force takes its name from its main maneuver unit, the 1st Cavalry Division at King Pha Mueang Camp in Mueang Phetchabun district, Phetchabun province. Its subordinate units include the Task Force Thap Chao Tak (2nd Cavalry Regiment Task Force) and Task Force Chaiyanuphap (5th Cavalry Regiment Task Force), supported by ranger regiment task forces, Border Patrol Police task forces, Mekong River patrol units, and dedicated drug-interdiction control commands. Public reporting on its official website highlights frequent seizures of methamphetamine pills and ketamine along the Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai border districts, as well as civil-support missions such as airlifting critical patients from remote areas in cooperation with national emergency medical teams.
History
Phamuang Command was established in 1995 (B.E. 2538) as one of the Royal Thai Army's border protection forces. Its first headquarters was at Camp Suriyaphong in Mueang Nan district, Nan province, and its initial area of responsibility covered only three provinces: Nan, Uttaradit and Phitsanulok. In 1999 (B.E. 2542), the Army Operation Center assigned Phamuang Command additional responsibility for the border areas of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Phayao provinces. As a result, the command relocated its headquarters to its current site in Chang Phueak sub-district, Mueang Chiang Mai district, Chiang Mai province. The force's name derives from its principal maneuver unit, the 1st Cavalry Division based at King Pha Mueang Camp (ค่ายพ่อขุนผาเมือง) in Mueang Phetchabun district, Phetchabun province. Over time the command's structure expanded to include dedicated task forces, ranger regiment task forces, Border Patrol Police task forces, Mekong River patrol units, and specialized drug-interdiction control commands, reflecting its broadened mission set along the Thai–Lao and Thai–Myanmar frontiers. By the 2020s, Phamuang Command's public communications — including its official website and Facebook page — regularly reported interdictions of large methamphetamine and ketamine shipments in border districts such as Mae Ai, Chiang Dao, Mae Sai, Chiang Saen and Mae Fa Luang, alongside civil-support missions such as emergency medical airlifts from remote areas.
