Overview
Pevnost is a Czech monthly magazine focused on science fiction, fantasy and horror. It was founded in 2002 by Martin Ladýř and Jan Hammer, who developed the concept based largely on their earlier project, the magazine Artefakt. The first issue appeared in January 2002, with Jan Hammer as the first editor-in-chief. Over the years the magazine has been led by a series of editors, including Dalibor Tichý, David Hartmann, Tomáš Němec, Alžběta Lexová, Josef Horký, and currently Martin Fajkus. The publisher is Ing. Kristina Nowakowska. The magazine publishes short stories by Czech and international authors, alongside sections on fantasy and sci-fi films, books, comics, interviews with writers, reports, and information about Czech fandom, computer games, role-playing games, board games, larp and anime. The opening pages are typically devoted to a theme of the issue, often major film hits. Other articles cover history and advice for aspiring short story writers, with contributions from figures such as Ondřej Neff, Petra Neomillnerová, Pavel Renčín, and František Kotleta. Pevnost also produces book supplements under the Pevnost Plus edition, regularly featuring fantasy novels or short story collections by Czech authors. Since around 2014, the number of non-literary supplements has grown, including film DVDs, audiobooks and comics. Occasionally, a monothematic supplement called Pevnost Speciál is published, containing films, posters and articles. The magazine remains active, with issues planned through 2026 according to its website.
History
Pevnost was founded in 2002 by Martin Ladýř and Jan Hammer. The two had previously worked on a magazine called Artefakt, and the concept for Pevnost largely copied that earlier project. The first issue was released in January 2002, with Jan Hammer serving as the first editor-in-chief. After Hammer, the magazine was led by Dalibor Tichý (April 2002 – January 2003), David Hartmann (February 2003 – August 2006), Tomáš Němec (September 2006 – October 2012), Alžběta Lexová (November 2012 – double issue 01-02/2013), the duo Tomáš Němec and Alžběta Lexová (March 2013 – December 2013), and Josef Horký (January 2014 – September 2014). Currently, the publisher is Ing. Kristina Nowakowska and the editor-in-chief is Martin Fajkus. From its inception, Pevnost has been a monthly magazine covering science fiction, fantasy and horror. It publishes short stories by Czech and foreign authors, alongside articles on films, books, comics, interviews, reports, and news about Czech fandom, computer games, role-playing games, board games, larp and anime. The magazine also provides advice for aspiring writers, with contributions from established Czech genre figures. A significant part of Pevnost's output is its book supplements, published under the Pevnost Plus edition. These often include fantasy novels or short story collections by Czech writers. Since around 2014, the range of supplements has expanded to include non-literary items such as film DVDs, audiobooks and comics. Additionally, a monothematic supplement called Pevnost Speciál is occasionally released, featuring films, posters and articles. The magazine continues to be published, with issues planned through 2026 as shown on its website.
