Overview
Peters Kölsch is a German beer brand specializing in Kölsch, a top-fermented beer style native to Cologne. The brand traces its origins to November 26, 1847, when Peter Josef Peters received permission to brew beer in Monheim. For much of its history, it was produced by the Monheimer Brauerei Peters & Bambeck, a family brewery that operated in Monheim am Rhein. The brewery was sold in 2004 and eventually closed, but the Peters Kölsch brand survived. Since 2004, production has been handled by other breweries within the Haus Kölscher Brautradition group, notably Gilden Kölsch Brauerei and later Früh-Kölsch. Today, Peters Kölsch is part of the Radeberger Gruppe, which is owned by the Oetker Group. The brand is marketed as a fresh, draft-like Kölsch in swing-top bottles, a unique packaging choice among Kölsch brands. It is available in 0.33-liter bottles and, in selected beverage markets and at Peters Brauhaus, in 1-liter bottles. The brand also operates Peters Brauhaus, a traditional brewery tavern in Cologne's Old Town, which is a stop on the Cologne Brauhaus hiking trail.
History
The history of Peters Kölsch begins on November 26, 1847, when Peter Josef Peters received official permission to brew beer in Monheim. This date is considered the official founding of the brewery, although brewing traditions in Monheim date back to 1262. The brewery operated as a family business for over a century. On January 1, 1965, the company name was changed to "Monheimer Brauerei Peters & Bambeck," and on October 1, 1999, it became "Privatbrauerei Peters & Bambeck." The Kölsch beer produced by this brewery was marketed under the name "Peters Echt Kölsch" until 1965. During renovation phases in 1991, Peters Kölsch was brewed under contract by Sieg-Rheinische Germania Brauerei and later by Kölschbrauerei Giesler. By 2000, the Peters & Bambeck private brewery produced six other beer styles alongside Peters Kölsch: Altbier, Pils, Malzbier, Festbier, Weizenbier, and Kräusen-Pils hefetrüb. Annual production at that time was about 30,000 hectoliters, with about 95% draft beer. In 2004, the private brewery was abandoned and sold to Brau und Brunnen, and the historic brewery site in Monheim am Rhein was closed shortly thereafter. Since 2004, Peters Kölsch has been brewed by Gilden Kölsch Brauerei in Cologne-Mülheim. Between 2019 and 2021, Haus Kölscher Brautradition gradually shifted production from its own brewery, which was sold to a real estate investor, to Früh-Kölsch. The beer is available in 0.33-liter swing-top bottles and, in selected beverage markets and at Peters Brauhaus, as "Littermännchen" (1-liter bottles). Annual production in 2006 was about 20,000 hectoliters. The label designation "Traditionsbrauerei Peters & Bambeck - Familientradition seit 1847" was used until 2012; since then, the brand advertises with "In der Tradition von Peters & Bambeck," without indicating the actual brewing location on the labels. In 1994, the brewery Peters & Bambeck purchased the former "Zum Kranz" tavern at the beginning of Mühlengasse at Cologne's Alter Markt and converted the historic building into a traditional Cologne-style brewery tavern called "Peters Brauhaus." This tavern is now a stop on the Cologne Brauhaus hiking trail, which follows the addresses of historic Cologne breweries and taverns.
