Overview
Perrot Turmuhren und Läuteanlagen is a German manufacturer of tower clocks, bell-ringing systems, carillons and related equipment, based in Calw in Baden-Württemberg. Founded in 1860 by Johann Immanuel Perrot, the company has remained a family business and was still run by the fifth generation of the Perrot family as of 2020. It combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, describing itself as giving 'time form and sound since 1860'. The company's product range includes tower clocks, bell-ringing systems, carillons, bells and bell yokes, clock faces and hands, exterior and facade clocks, tower ornaments, gilding, restoration of mechanical tower clocks, secondary clock systems, sports display systems, advertising clocks, special clocks (e.g. with second hands or 24-hour movements), and flower clocks. It also offers repairs and maintenance throughout Germany and can carry out installation without scaffolding. Perrot is internationally known for having manufactured the world's largest tower clock, installed on the central skyscraper of the Abraj Al Bait Towers — the Mecca Royal Clock Tower Hotel — in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The clock was inaugurated in 2011 by Saudi King Abdul Aziz. In 1999 the company took over the tower clock factory Bernhard Zachariä of Leipzig. The firm's manufacturing operations cover design, development, engineering, mechanical production, locksmithing and forging, electronics and electrical work, and painting. Notable historical connections include Hermann Hesse, who began a 15-month internship at the firm in June 1894. The family originally came from France as part of a group of Waldensians accepted by Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg from 1699, which helped spread new trades such as watchmaking in the duchy. The company remains a private family-owned business and continues to operate from Calw.
History
Perrot Turmuhren und Läuteanlagen was founded in 1860 in Calw, Baden-Württemberg, by Johann Immanuel Perrot. The Perrot family originally came from France and belonged to a group of Waldensians whom Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg accepted from 1699, which led to the spread of new trades such as silk weaving, stocking knitting, wig making, hat making, perfume trading and watchmaking in the duchy. Johann Immanuel Perrot (15 May 1835 – 30 April 1898) was born as the seventh child of schoolmaster Jean Henri Perrot in Neuhengstett. He trained as a locksmith in Calw, then went on his journeyman travels and worked for a time at the Mannhardt tower clock factory in Munich. The knowledge he acquired there provided the basis for founding his own tower clock factory in 1860. His successor Heinrich Immanuel Perrot (24 December 1864 – 4 January 1948) also learned the tower clockmaking trade and was an inventor. He was the first in the then German Empire to construct a tower clock with an electric motor-driven striking mechanism and electro-automatic weight winding. Walter Immanuel Perrot (30 August 1895 – 6 November 1978) attended the Latin school until the sixth grade and then learned mechanics in the family business. After his training was interrupted by World War I, he attended the technical school for watchmakers in Schwenningen, where he also passed his master examination. Heinrich Immanuel Perrot (22 October 1929 – 6 March 2014) completed school, a mechanic apprenticeship at Perrot Regnerbau, an internship at the Württembergische Uhrenfabrik Bürk & Söhne, and an engineering degree in Esslingen before joining the company. In 1993 Heinrich I. Perrot handed over the company to three of his four sons. The company's manufacturing of clocks and bell systems encompasses design, development, engineering, mechanical production, locksmithing and forging, electronics and electrical work, and painting. In 1999 the company took over the tower clock factory Bernhard Zachariä of Leipzig. Perrot manufactured the world's largest tower clock on the central skyscraper of the Abraj Al Bait Towers, the Mecca Royal Clock Tower Hotel, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It was inaugurated in 2011 by Saudi King Abdul Aziz. As of 2020 the company was still run by the fifth generation of the Perrot family. A notable historical connection is that Hermann Hesse began a 15-month internship at the firm in June 1894.
