Overview

Pearl.tv is a German private teleshopping channel founded in December 2011 as a joint venture between the mail-order company Pearl and Enstyle Studios in Buggingen. It launched its unofficial broadcast on 29 February 2012 via SES Astra digital, taking over the former slot of the music channel Yavido. The channel is an extension of Pearl's catalogue and online retail business, which had already produced around 2,000 product films since 2009. Pearl.tv focuses on a largely technical product range, including consumer electronics, PC accessories, mobile phones, tablets, as well as sports, leisure, household, car accessories, and toys. The product selection is based on Pearl's mail-order assortment, which comprised around 16,000 items by the end of 2012. The channel initially aired mostly recordings but increasingly shifted to live programming from September 2012. By January 2015, live broadcasts reached up to eight hours per day. Currently, live shows air Monday to Friday from 13:00 to 21:00, interspersed with inserts and repeats. In November 2012, the satellite signal was upgraded from SD to HD. On 28 July 2014, an additional SD slot was launched via Astra 19.2° East. UHDTV (4K) broadcasting began on 4 September 2015 at the IFA in Berlin and ended on 30 September 2019. Cable distribution via Unitymedia ceased in January 2017. Since 2018, Pearl.tv has broadcast from Dassel, where a commercial property of JAGO was acquired. The 75,000 m² site and approximately 21,900 m² of building space house the broadcast centre with over 2,700 m² of studio space. A new design was introduced on 14 July 2019. In the Pÿur cable network, the channel was only available in HD until the end of 2024. At the end of 2024, SD distribution was discontinued on all transmission paths. The channel is available via Astra in HD and as a 4K livestream online. Pearl.tv positions itself as entertainment-focused shopping TV, combining live production, honest product advice, spontaneous moments, and strong personalities. It claims to be a 4K pioneer since 2015, with over 50,000 live shows produced and 15 studio sets. The channel is produced in the EnStyle Studios in Dassel, which are among the most modern TV broadcasting centres in Germany. The official website enstyle.de serves as the channel's online presence, offering a livestream and links to the Pearl online shop with over 16,000 products.

History

Pearl.tv was founded in December 2011 as a joint venture between the mail-order company Pearl and Enstyle Studios in Buggingen. The mail-order house had previously produced around 2,000 product films for a large part of its assortment since 2009 and integrated such clips into its online shop as one of the first mail-order companies in Germany. On 17 February 2012, EnStyle was granted a broadcasting licence by the Commission for Admission and Supervision (ZAK) and the Baden-Württemberg State Media Authority (LfK). The unofficial launch of pearl.tv took place on 29 February 2012 via SES Astra digital on the former broadcasting slot of the music channel Yavido. The programme start was announced in the media for weeks in advance. In November 2012, the satellite programme was converted from SD to HD resolution. On 28 July 2014, an additional broadcasting slot in standard definition (SD) was launched via satellite Astra 19.2° East. Broadcasting in UHDTV (pearl.tv UHD 4K) began on 4 September 2015 at the IFA in Berlin and ended on 30 September 2019. Broadcasting via the cable network operator Unitymedia was discontinued in January 2017. Since 2018, Pearl.tv has broadcast from Dassel. For this purpose, a commercial property of the company JAGO was taken over. On the 75,000 m² site and in approximately 21,900 m² of building space, the broadcasting centre was created with a studio area of over 2,700 m². On 14 July 2019, the channel introduced a new design. In the cable network of Pÿur, the channel was only available in HD resolution until the end of 2024. At the end of 2024, the distribution of the channel in SD resolution was discontinued on all transmission paths. The programme was produced in the EnStyle Studios in Buggingen, built in 2011. In 2015, all HD technology was replaced with 4K technology. Thus, from September 2015 to the end of September 2019, pearl.tv was the first television channel in Europe to produce and broadcast a daily live programme in UHD. Since 2018, the broadcasting centre has been in Dassel. Pearl.tv broadcasts with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels on the HD channel. With 3840 × 2160 pixels and 50 frames per second, it broadcast in parallel on the UHD channel via Astra digital 19.2° East until 30 September 2019. The programme can be received via Astra in HD with the following reception parameters: Astra 1L, 19.2 degrees East, frequency: 12.574 GHz, polarisation: horizontal, modulation: DVB-S2, 8PSK, symbol rate: 22,000 MSym/s, FEC: 2/3. The teleshopping programme is also available as a livestream in 4K resolution on the internet. The channel's programming focuses on a largely technical assortment and sexist portrayals aimed primarily at male viewers. The product selection is based on the assortment of the mail-order company Pearl and comprised around 16,000 items at the end of 2012 from the areas of consumer electronics, PC accessories, mobile phones, tablet PCs, but also products from the areas of sports, leisure, household, car accessories, and toys. After pearl.tv initially broadcast mostly recordings in the first months, more and more live programming has been broadcast since September 2012. In January 2015, the proportion of live broadcasts was up to eight hours per day. Currently, live broadcasts can be seen Monday to Friday daily from 13:00 to 21:00, interrupted by various inserts and repeats of past shows.
