Overview

PCL Construction, formally known as the PCL family of companies, is one of North America's largest general contracting and construction management firms. Founded in 1906 in Stoughton, Saskatchewan, as Martin and Poole Construction, the company has grown into a diversified builder with operations across Canada, the United States, Australia, and the Caribbean. PCL is 100% employee-owned and is headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta. The company is known for delivering complex, large-scale projects in sectors including commercial, institutional, industrial, and civil infrastructure, as well as notable sports venues and theme park attractions. Under the leadership of President and CEO Chris Gower, who assumed the role in November 2024, PCL continues to emphasize employee ownership and collaborative project delivery. Its portfolio includes high-profile projects such as Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) in Los Angeles, BMO Stadium, and various attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood. PCL's long history and employee-centric model have positioned it as a trusted partner in the construction industry.

History

PCL Construction traces its origins to 1906 when James Martin and Ernest Edward Poole founded Martin and Poole Construction in Stoughton, Saskatchewan. After the winter of 1906–07, Martin decided to retire, and Poole continued the business, renaming it E.E. Poole Contractors in 1907. In 1913, the company was incorporated as Poole Construction Company Limited. In 1932, the company relocated its headquarters to Edmonton, Alberta, where it remains today. The company expanded into the United States in 1975, opening a U.S. head office in Denver, Colorado. In 1977, Ernest Poole's sons, John Edward and George Ernest, sold the company to 25 senior managers and Great West Life. In 1979, the company was renamed PCL Construction Ltd. Over the decades, PCL has built a reputation for delivering landmark projects, including major sports venues and theme park attractions. Today, PCL is 100% employee-owned and operates as a family of independent construction companies across Canada, the United States, Australia, and the Caribbean. In November 2024, Chris Gower became President and CEO.
