Overview
Paz e Terra is a Brazilian publishing house founded in July 1966 by Ênio Silveira and Moacyr Félix, initially under the editorial production of Civilização Brasileira and directed by Waldo César. Its name was inspired by the papal encyclical Pacem in Terris, and it was created in a context of democratic resistance, structured around the defense of freedom of thought and the right to dialogue. The publisher began by giving voice to progressive religious opinions across Christian churches, helping to introduce Liberation Theology ideas in Brazil. Over the decades, it built a catalogue of approximately 1,200 titles, with emphasis on human sciences, and published authors such as Celso Furtado, Paulo Freire, Helio Jaguaribe, Eric J. Hobsbawm, Michel Foucault, Bruno Bettelheim, Eduardo Galeano, Norberto Bobbio, Manuel Castells, Kenneth Maxwell, Conrad Detrez, Georges Duby, and Thomas Skidmore. In 1975, due to financial difficulties and political repression, it was sold to Fernando Gasparian, owner of the opposition newspaper Opinião. The Opinião group became associated with the publisher, which then counted on names such as Alceu Amoroso Lima, Barbosa Lima Sobrinho, Berta Ribeiro, Dias Gomes, Érico Veríssimo, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, José Aparecido de Oliveira, and Wilson Fadul. During this period, it launched Revista Argumento, a publication for political, economic, and artistic debate, whose circulation was suspended at the fourth issue due to censorship pressures. In 1976, it acquired the Edições Graal imprint. It won the Prêmio Jabuti ten times, including in 2006 in the Economics, Administration, Business and Law category. In 1995, it entered the pocket book market, initially printing on newsprint to reduce costs, though it soon abandoned that paper type. In 2012, Paz e Terra was acquired by Grupo Editorial Record. Today, under Record, it continues to publish titles that provoke critical thinking about society and our time, including the complete works of Paulo Freire, one of the most relevant thinkers of the 20th century and Patron of Brazilian Education. Its catalogue includes works such as Pedagogia do oprimido, Conversas corajosas, Microfísica do poder, A psicanálise dos contos de fadas, Educação como prática da liberdade, Jung: Vida e obra, História da sexualidade, Box As eras, Anatomia do fascismo, Aparelhos ideológicos de Estado, Indústria cultural e sociedade, Estado, governo, sociedade, Pedagogia da autonomia, and O manifesto comunista.
History
Paz e Terra was inaugurated in July 1966, created by Ênio Silveira together with Moacyr Félix, under the direction of Waldo César. It was part of the editorial production of Civilização Brasileira and was intended to publish opinions of progressive religious people from all Christian churches, protected by a legal editorial organization, a fact that would end up launching the ideas of Liberation Theology in Brazil. It later began publishing books, initially releasing sixteen titles in 1968 and twenty-five titles in 1968 (as stated in the source). In 1975, it was sold to Fernando Gasparian due to financial difficulties and the clashes of political repression. Gasparian was the owner of the opposition newspaper Opinião, one of the most important of the country's alternative press. The Opinião group became associated with the publisher, which then counted on names such as Alceu Amoroso Lima, Barbosa Lima Sobrinho, Berta Ribeiro, Celso Furtado, Dias Gomes, Érico Veríssimo, Fernando Gasparian, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, José Aparecido de Oliveira, and Wilson Fadul. At that time, the publisher launched Revista Argumento to debate political, economic, and artistic themes, but its circulation was suspended at the fourth issue due to censorship pressures. In 1976, it acquired another imprint, Edições Graal, and today its catalogue has approximately 1,200 titles in various areas, with emphasis on human sciences. It has won the Prêmio Jabuti ten times, including in 2006 in the Economics, Administration, Business and Law category, among others. In 1995, it debuted in the pocket book market; as a way to lower costs, the books were printed on newsprint, but it soon abandoned that type of paper. In 2012, it was bought by Grupo Editorial Record. The Coleção Estudos Brasileiros of Paz e Terra was published between 1974 and 1987. This series of books was composed notably of works by intellectuals from Brazil and abroad—especially the United States—linked to the areas of Political Science, History, Sociology, Economics, and Anthropology. With the participation of a total of eighty-eight authors and the presence of nearly one hundred titles in its catalogue, they contributed to the consolidation of a new vocabulary about Brazil largely influenced by a common political objective: the end of the order implemented in 1964. Between 1982 and 1984, José Carlos de Assis launched three important investigative journalism books that unveiled high-level corruption in the 1970s during the Brazilian military dictatorship: A Chave do Tesouro: Anatomia dos Escândalos Financeiros: Brasil, 1974-1983; Os Mandarins da República: Anatomia dos Escândalos na Administração Pública, 1968-1984; and A Dupla Face da Corrupção. Today, Paz e Terra is part of Grupo Editorial Record and continues to publish titles that stimulate critical thinking, including the complete works of Paulo Freire.
