Overview

Pathé City is a cinema in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, operated by the Pathé cinema chain. It is located at Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen 15-19, about 40 metres from the Leidseplein and diagonally opposite De Balie. The cinema occupies the City Theatergebouw, a theatre building dating from 1935. Originally it was built with a single large auditorium. The first film screened there was Episode, directed by Walter Reisch and starring Paula Wessely. In the 1950s City was a popular entertainment venue, with a focus on films from MGM and Disney. The cinema had an orchestra pit and the City Theater Orkest, which under conductor Lex van Weren provided music before the film. Since 1995 the cinema chain Pathé has been the owner. In early 2007 the building was closed for a major renovation. The last regular screening for the time being took place on 31 January 2007, and from 18 to 25 April 2007 the cinema hosted the 23rd Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival. On 2 December 2010 the doors reopened with seven auditoriums for arthouse films. The large auditorium also had a theatre organ built in 1935 by the firm Strunk. At the opening, the theatre's first resident organist, the Englishman Reginald Foort, played. He was succeeded by Cor Steyn and in 1941 by Piet van Egmond. The instrument was rebuilt in 1938 and 1950. During the renovation of the auditorium in the early 1970s, the upper organ chamber was largely sealed off by a lowered ceiling. Herman van Voorthuizen was the last organist in permanent employment in the mid-1970s. After 1996 the organ was no longer playable.
