Passware

Passware is described on its official site as a maker of password recovery and e-Discovery software, founded in 1998. Its product line includes Passware Kit Ultimate, Passware Kit Forensic, Passware Kit Mobile, Passware Kit Business, and Passware Kit Standard, covering password recovery for files and disks, mobile device decryption, and distributed password recovery. The company states its forensic products are used by law enforcement agencies, government bodies, and corporate organizations.

Passware was founded in 1998. According to the company's About page, while a mathematics student at university, Dmitry Sumin changed a password and locked himself out of his journal; existing software could not unlock it, so he wrote his own. He put the software online and asked people to send postcards if they liked it, receiving hundreds, along with requests asking 'Can you crack this?' If his software could not, he added a feature so it could. He was soon spending so much time supporting his software that he had little choice but to form a company, and Passware was born. Sumin was soon approached by law enforcement with the same old question.
