Overview
Palo Alto Research Center, widely known as PARC and formerly as Xerox PARC, is a research and development organization in Palo Alto, California. It was established by Xerox Corporation in 1970 to pursue advanced work in computer science, electronics, materials science, physics, and related technologies. The laboratory was created partly to complement Xerox's established research operations in Rochester, New York, which were primarily oriented toward improving photocopiers and document technologies. Its West Coast location gave researchers considerable independence from Xerox's main corporate structure and placed them near Stanford University, SRI's research community, and the growing Silicon Valley technology ecosystem. PARC became one of the most influential industrial research laboratories in computing history. Its researchers developed or advanced technologies associated with laser printing, Ethernet networking, bitmap graphics, graphical user interfaces, the desktop metaphor, computer mice, object-oriented programming, electronic paper, amorphous-silicon electronics, very-large-scale integration, ubiquitous computing, and several important programming-language and software-architecture concepts. The Alto workstation brought many of these ideas together in an integrated personal-computing system with a display, mouse, graphical interface, local networking, and software designed for interactive use. Although the Alto and the later Xerox Star workstation did not achieve the commercial impact of subsequent products from Apple, Microsoft, and other companies, PARC's research strongly influenced the design of later personal computers and office systems. The laboratory's early direction was shaped by founder and Xerox chief scientist Jacob E. Goldman, while its Computer Science Laboratory was notably led by Robert Taylor during the 1970s and early 1980s. PARC recruited researchers from nearby institutions and worked with Stanford students and academic collaborators. Its researchers included recipients of major computing honors, including Turing Award winners Butler Lampson, Alan Kay, Charles P. Thacker, and Robert Metcalfe. After more than three decades as a Xerox division, PARC was reorganized in 2002 as Palo Alto Research Center Incorporated, an independent but wholly owned Xerox subsidiary. The company operated as a research partner and technology-development organization, combining exploratory science with applied research, commercialization support, licensing, and technology transfer. In April 2023, Xerox announced that it would donate PARC and related assets to SRI International. The transaction preserved Xerox's rights to most PARC patents and provided for a preferred research relationship. In January 2024, SRI stated that the research organization would become its Future Concepts division. Accordingly, PARC's present identity is connected to SRI's research activities rather than to an independent Xerox laboratory, although the PARC name and its historical technology portfolio remain significant.
History
The origins of PARC lie in Xerox's effort to create a second major research center outside its established Rochester, New York, operations. In 1969, Xerox chief scientist Jacob E. Goldman discussed the idea with George Pake, a physicist and academic administrator who later became the laboratory's founding director. Goldman wanted a center capable of pursuing advanced scientific and systems research rather than concentrating primarily on incremental improvements to photocopying and document equipment. The Xerox Palo Alto Research Center opened on July 1, 1970. Its location in California, thousands of miles from Xerox headquarters, gave researchers unusual freedom to explore long-term ideas. The laboratory also benefited from proximity to Stanford University, SRI's Augmentation Research Center, and the expanding network of electronics and computing companies in Silicon Valley. PARC recruited researchers from nearby organizations and encouraged interaction with university students, seminars, and collaborative projects. This environment helped it assemble a multidisciplinary community spanning computer science, electrical engineering, materials science, physics, and human-computer interaction. During the 1970s, PARC's Computer Science Laboratory became a major center of experimental computing. Robert Taylor served as associate manager from 1970 to 1977 and manager from 1977 to 1983. Researchers created the Alto, an experimental personal computer that combined a bitmapped display, graphical interface, mouse, local networking, and software intended for interactive office work. The laboratory also developed the Smalltalk programming language and environment, the Bravo WYSIWYG editor, Ethernet networking, Interpress page-description technology, and important methods for object-oriented programming and software design. These projects were not always commercialized by Xerox at the scale their later influence might suggest, but they provided a coherent model for personal and networked computing. PARC's research extended beyond the Alto and graphical interfaces. Its scientists contributed to laser printing, electronic paper, amorphous-silicon applications, semiconductor design and VLSI methods, ubiquitous computing, prototype-based programming through Self, model-view-controller architecture, aspect-oriented programming, and networking concepts related to the development of Internet-era systems. Experimental devices such as the PARCTab explored location-aware mobile computing using infrared infrastructure, touchscreen interaction, a stylus, and handwriting recognition. The laboratory's commercial record became a recurring subject of business-history criticism. Xerox successfully introduced some PARC-related technologies, including laser printing, but was widely viewed as having struggled to convert the full potential of its computing research into a dominant personal-computer business. The Xerox Star office workstation, introduced in 1981, presented a commercially developed version of the graphical desktop approach, yet its sales were limited. Former PARC ideas and personnel subsequently influenced companies including Apple, Microsoft, IBM, and Metaphor Computer Systems. This pattern contributed to PARC's enduring reputation as an exceptionally productive research laboratory whose ideas often had greater impact outside Xerox than within Xerox's core product strategy. In 2002, Xerox separated PARC from its divisional structure and made it an independent, wholly owned subsidiary. The new organization continued to conduct sponsored research, develop prototypes, mature technologies, and support licensing and commercialization. Its work encompassed information technology as well as materials, electronics, energy, communications, and other applied-science fields. In April 2023, Xerox announced that it would donate PARC and related assets to SRI International. The agreement allowed Xerox to retain most patent rights associated with PARC while obtaining a preferred research arrangement with SRI and PARC. In January 2024, SRI announced that the research group would become its Future Concepts division. The transition placed PARC's research capabilities within SRI's broader nonprofit research structure while preserving the laboratory's historical role and much of its technology legacy.

PARCTab was an experimental mobile-computing device developed as part of PARC's ubiquitous-computing research. It used a touchscreen, stylus, handwriting recognition, and infrared location infrastructure to provide information associated with the user's position. The project explored ideas that later appeared in mobile, context-aware, and location-based computing.
