Overview
Papierfabrik Palm is a German paper company that describes itself as one of the leading companies in the European paper industry. The Palm Group is divided into Papierfabrik Palm with 5 paper mills, Palm Packaging Group with 33 corrugated board plants, and Palm Recycling with two recycling companies. It produces newsprint and corrugated base paper from 100% recovered fibre, and its packaging operations supply corrugated board solutions. The company traces its origins to 1872, when the merchant Adolf Palm acquired a water-powered factory in Aalen-Neukochen, Germany, and converted production to paper made from secondary fibres.
History
The company's history begins in 1872, when the merchant Adolf Palm, at the age of 26, acquired a water-powered factory in Aalen-Neukochen, Germany, to manufacture agricultural iron products. He quickly converted the production line to produce paper made from secondary fibres, an early form of recycling, using bast fibre obtained cheaply as residue from the local textile industry, and advertised its packaging material with the motto 'excellent and tough natural brown bast paper'. By 1876 annual production reached 220 tonnes. In 1918 Adolf Palm handed over the running of the company to his sons Otto and Hermann Palm, with annual production at 1,500 tonnes. A new Voith paper machine from Heidenheim was purchased in 1921. In 1952 Dr. Wilfried Palm, son of Otto Palm, and the engineer Gottfried Palm, son of Hermann Palm, joined the management, and annual production exceeded 10,000 tonnes. A second Voith paper machine went into operation in 1956. In 1962 the third paper machine at Palm was the first German machine for corrugated base paper with a dual web width, and in 1968 the first Testliner paper machine in Germany went into operation. In 1974 the fifth paper machine, described as the world's fastest cylinder mould former machine, went into operation. In 1984 Palm became the first German paper mill to successfully produce newsprint paper made from 100% recycled paper, and acquired the corrugated board plant in Sinsheim, Germany; in 1986 it acquired three corrugated board plants in Forchheim, Gelsenkirchen and Höchstädt, all in Germany.
