The Koehler Group states that it can look back on more than 215 years of company history. In 1807, Otto Koehler acquired the Oberkirch "Papiermühle im Loh" and founded what the company describes as today's global enterprise; the mill had been acquired by Jacob Pfeil of Ettlingen in 1802, who was already insolvent by 1807, and the mill passed to Otto Koehler. The company has been in family ownership since 1807. In 1865 the first paper machine marked the transition from hand papermaking to machine production; the machine had a working width of 135 centimeters. In 1879 water turbines replaced water wheels and the paper machine received steam drive. In 1898 the company had more than 100 employees for the first time.
