Overview

Papaiz is a Brazilian brand of padlocks, locks, hinges and hardware, founded in Brazil in 1952 by the Italian immigrant Luigi Papaiz. Its origins trace back to a small factory started in Italy in 1947; the business was re-established in Brazil in 1952 in Vila Prudente, São Paulo. Over the following decades Papaiz grew into one of the largest hardware manufacturers in Brazil, moving its factory to Diadema in 1982 and opening a new plant in Salvador, Bahia, in 2000. By 2008 production was fully concentrated in Salvador, and the Diadema operations were closed. The brand's portfolio includes padlocks, residential and furniture locks, hinges and accessories. Papaiz is known for bringing a concept of style and design into the world of padlocks and residential locks, and its partnerships with prominent Brazilian designers helped turn security items into desirable objects. The company describes itself as a trendsetter in this segment. In December 2015 the Papaiz group was acquired by the Swedish multinational ASSA ABLOY, a global leader in access solutions. Under ASSA ABLOY, Papaiz is one of several leading Brazilian brands in the group's local portfolio, alongside names such as La Fonte, Yale, Silvana and Udinese. ASSA ABLOY states that it operates in more than 70 countries and comprises more than 400 subsidiary companies. Papaiz products are present in more than 20 countries. The brand markets padlocks, hinges, locks, a digital line, a furniture line, electronic security and locks, and sells through retailers, dealers, representatives, OEM channels, engineering representatives and certified installers, as well as an online store and direct-from-factory purchasing. Its tagline in Portuguese is "Vai Tranquilo, Vai de Papaiz."

History

Papaiz traces its origins to a small factory established in Italy in 1947. In 1952 the business began operations in Brazil, founded by the Italian immigrant Luigi Papaiz in Vila Prudente, São Paulo. The company manufactured padlocks and locks and gradually established itself in the Brazilian hardware market. In 1982 the factory was transferred to Diadema, in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, where Papaiz consolidated its position as one of the largest manufacturers in the Brazilian hardware sector. In 2000 a new factory was inaugurated in Salvador, Bahia, expanding the brand's presence in the northeast of the country. In 2008 production was entirely transferred to the Salvador plant, ending activities in Diadema. Over the years Papaiz built a reputation not only for security and quality but also for design. The company introduced the concept of style and design into the world of padlocks and residential locks, and partnerships with prominent names in Brazilian design helped transform security items into desirable objects, safely and harmoniously integrated into the home. In December 2015 the Papaiz group was acquired by the Swedish multinational ASSA ABLOY, a global leader in access solutions. ASSA ABLOY, present in more than 70 countries and comprising more than 400 subsidiary companies, also acquired other high-quality Brazilian brands such as La Fonte, Papaiz, Yale, Silvana, Udinese, ASSA ABLOY Portas Especiais and ASSA ABLOY Controle de Acesso. Within the group, Papaiz continues to operate as a brand, with a portfolio covering padlocks, residential and furniture locks, hinges and accessories, and a presence in more than 20 countries.
