Overview

The Paolina Hut (German: Paolina-Hütte, Italian: Rifugio Paolina) is a private mountain hut and mountain inn located at 2,125 metres above sea level on the south-western slope of the Rosengarten group in the Dolomites, Italy. It stands in the municipality of Sèn Jan di Fassa in Trentino, just a few metres from the border with the South Tyrolean municipality of Welschnofen, roughly 400 metres above the Karer Pass and about 600 metres above Lake Karersee. The hut is a well-known base for hikers and climbers in summer and forms part of the Carezza – Karersee ski area in winter. It is reached in minutes by the Paolina chairlift, which terminates directly at the hut, or by an hour-long walk from the Karer Pass or the Nigerstraße. The hut was built in 1954 by Sepp and Anna Pichler and has been run by their son Hermann since 1978. The dining room was extended in the 1980s and the old guest room was renovated in 2011. Since 2009 the hut has had an electrical supply. According to the operator, it has the highest panoramic terrace in the Rosengarten. The Paolina Hut serves as a starting and finishing point for many hikes and climbing tours, including the Rotwand (2,806 m) via ferrata, the Vajolon Pass (2,560 m), the Tschagerjoch (2,630 m) and the Santner Pass (2,734 m). The neighbouring Kölner Hut can be reached in about 1¼ hours via the Hirzelsteig, and the Christomannos Monument at the southern tip of the Rosengarten group is about half an hour away for experienced hikers. The Paolina Hut is a commercial hospitality brand: a mountain refuge offering food, drink and accommodation to visitors, operated as a private family business rather than by an alpine club. Its identity is tied to its high-altitude location, its panoramic terrace and its role as a gateway to the Rosengarten climbing and hiking area.
