Overview

Pancreatic Cancer Action (PCA) is a UK charity that describes itself as the only UK charity specifically focusing on improving pancreatic cancer survival rates through early diagnosis in everything it does. Founded in 2010 by Ali Stunt, a rare survivor of pancreatic cancer, the charity works to ensure more people are diagnosed early and in time for surgery, and to improve patients' quality of life. Its activities include education and awareness training for healthcare professionals, public awareness campaigns, and campaigning and lobbying government and key stakeholders for change.

History

Pancreatic Cancer Action (PCA) was founded in 2010 by Ali Stunt, who is herself a rare survivor of pancreatic cancer. Diagnosed in 2007, Ali's personal experience highlighted the urgent need for earlier diagnosis and better public awareness, and her vision was to create a charity solely focused on improving early detection and survival outcomes for pancreatic cancer patients. That same year, Pancreatic Cancer Scotland (PCS) was launched by a team including pancreatic cancer specialist Ross Carter, established in response to the distinct healthcare system in Scotland and the need for targeted support, awareness, and education north of the border; it was initially volunteer-led. Over the next decade, both PCA and PCS expanded their reach and influence: PCA developed accredited e-learning for GPs and pharmacists, launched the UK's first pancreatic cancer pharmacy training, and funded vital research and clinical posts, while PCS introduced specialist educational materials, worked closely with NHS Scotland, and implemented staff-led initiatives from 2017 onwards. In January 2020, PCA and PCS announced their intention to merge, recognising that a unified approach would amplify their impact.
