Overview

Pallion Group is an Australian privately owned precious-metals services group headquartered in Sydney. Its businesses design, manufacture, refine, trade, distribute and safeguard precious-metal products for institutional, investment and jewellery-industry customers. The group is described as the largest precious-metals services group in Australasia and combines bullion dealing, precious-metal refining and minting, custom jewellery, jewellery findings, fabricated alloys, wedding rings, electroplating, goldsmithing, silversmithing and vaulting. Pallion was formed through the 2014 financial merger of two established Australian business groups: ABC Bullion, which began distributing bullion in 1972, and the Palloys Group, whose operating history reaches back to Palloys Refining Co., established in Sydney in 1951. The combination brought together a bullion and investment-metals platform with a broad manufacturing and jewellery-services network. Its ownership remains private, with interests associated with the Cochineas, Gregg and Simpson families. The group’s industrial heritage began with precious-metal refining and jewellery and dental component production. Palloys entered casting through a 1952 arrangement with Matthey Garrett and subsequently expanded across Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. From the late 1980s onward, the business diversified into alloyed precious-metal wire, sheet, solder, wedding rings and related manufacturing. During the 2000s and early 2010s it added computer-aided jewellery design and rapid prototyping, jewellery findings, international production, fabricated metals and bullion-refining capabilities. A major part of Pallion’s institutional platform is ABC Refinery, which the group and ABC Bullion acquired through a joint venture in 2012. ABC Refinery later secured laboratory, London Bullion Market Association, Shanghai Gold Exchange and COMEX-related accreditations for gold and silver products. The refinery also introduced an acidless refining system designed to reduce the use of harmful acids and associated emissions. ABC Bullion operates as a bullion dealer and manufacturer, while Custodian Vaults provides private secure storage. Pallion serves central banks, investment banks, investors, wholesale jewellery companies, government bodies and other commercial customers. Its work has included bullion bars and coins, jewellery components, trophies, ceremonial objects, mounts, precious-metal lettering and specialist fabrication. Publicly identified projects include work associated with the Melbourne Cup, ATP Cup, Australian Open trophies, royal coaches, the Australian War Memorial and other commemorative or institutional commissions. The group maintains manufacturing and sales operations in Australian cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, as well as in Hong Kong, mainland China, Thailand and Western Europe. Its brands and operating entities have progressively been consolidated, including the 2020 amalgamation of A&E Metals, AGS|PJW, Regentco and Palloys under the Palloys name for the global business-to-business jewellery market. Pallion’s positioning is that of an integrated, technically capable precious-metals partner rather than a consumer-facing jewellery label: it connects raw-material processing, manufacturing, wholesale distribution, bullion markets and secure custody within one privately controlled group.

History

Pallion’s history combines two Australian precious-metals traditions. Palloys began in 1951 as Palloys Refining Co. in Woollahra, Sydney. It was established by Felix Parry, also known as Felix Pisarewski, a Polish war veteran and post-war refugee. The original business refined precious metals obtained from jewellery and dental sources. In 1952, an agreement with Matthey Garrett shifted the emphasis toward lost-wax casting for jewellery and dental components, while Matthey Garrett supplied bulk refining services. The company adopted the shorter Palloys name and by the middle of the 1950s was serving customers in Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. Palloys expanded beyond Australia in 1962 through a Hong Kong joint venture with Wheelock Marden. The venture was the first company involved in precious-metals casting in Hong Kong. In 1965, Wieland Edelmetalle acquired a minority interest, and Palloys became the Australian distributor for Wieland plating products. Interests associated with the Kay family acquired the remaining ownership in 1986. The second major predecessor was Australian Bullion Company (NSW) Pty Ltd, established in 1972 to distribute bullion products throughout Australia. It later traded as ABC Bullion and developed into an important independent Australian bullion dealer. Palloys diversified further in 1990 through a joint venture involving Bullion Mark and Harringtons, creating Alloy & Gold Supply (NSW) Pty Ltd. The venture manufactured alloyed precious-metal products including wire, sheet, solder and milled wedding rings, while also providing refining services. Through subsequent ownership changes, the non-Palloys interest moved to AGR Matthey, a venture linked to the Perth Mint, Australian Gold Alliance and Johnson Matthey. New interests acquired Palloys in late 2007. In 2008, Palloys acquired AGR Matthey’s interests in Alloy & Gold Supply and its jewellery division. Alloy & Gold Supply was renamed AGS Metals, and the broader Palloys Group emerged. The group launched a large computer-aided design, rapid-prototyping and jewellery-manufacturing division in 2008, added the Regentco jewellery-findings business in 2009 and acquired P.J. Williams through AGS Metals in 2011, creating AGS|PJW. International expansion accelerated between 2009 and 2014, when Palloys acquired Goldenage International. The business had manufacturing and office operations in Hong Kong and mainland China and was known for volume jewellery findings. It later added premium custom production for major jewellery brands. In 2012, the group moved its international headquarters to Sydney. That year Pallion-related interests and ABC Bullion formed a joint venture to acquire ABC Refinery. The refinery became a major private Australian refiner and assayer, receiving laboratory accreditation and later international market accreditations. ABC Bullion also began Hong Kong trading operations in 2013, while Custodian Vaults was established in Australia to provide private secure storage. In 2014, ABC Refinery began constructing a new Australian minting facility, and the Pallion jewellery division received an Australian Jewellery Industry Award. Late that year, ABC Bullion and Palloys Group companies financially merged under the Pallion holding company. In 2015, Palloys was recognised as an Australian jewellery manufacturer, Pallion acquired A&E Metals, and ABC Bullion received rights to manufacture Melbourne Cup trophies. ABC Refinery joined the LBMA Good Delivery list for gold in December 2015. The group continued to build international market access. ABC Refinery received Shanghai Gold Exchange accreditation in 2018 and installed an acidless refining system that was presented as reducing harmful chemical use and emissions. Pallion also acquired WJ Sanders, described as Australia’s last traditional manufacturing silversmith. Palloys obtained Responsible Jewellery Council certification in 2019. In 2020, ABC Refinery received CME Group accreditation for COMEX gold, while several jewellery businesses were consolidated under the Palloys name. In 2021, ABC Refinery gained LBMA and COMEX recognition for silver. ABC Bullion opened a global retail flagship in Sydney in 2023. Pallion remains an active private group with facilities and offices across Australia and selected Asian and European markets.
