Overview

The Palace in Staniszów (Polish: Pałac w Staniszowie, German: Schloss Stonsdorf) is a historic palace located in the village of Staniszów, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of Poland. The building dates back to the 16th century and was expanded and baroque-ised in the 18th century. Over the centuries, it was owned by noble families including the von Schmettau and Reuss families. After 1945, when the region became part of Poland, the palace served as a children's holiday home and later as a fire station, falling into disrepair. Today, it has been restored and operates as a hotel and spa under the name Hotel SPA Pałac Staniszów. The hotel offers accommodation, dining, and wellness facilities, set within a restored landscape park. The palace is a notable example of architectural heritage in the region and is privately owned by Wacław Dzida.

History

The Palace in Staniszów, known in German as Schloss Stonsdorf, is a historic building in the village of Staniszów (formerly Stonsdorf) in Lower Silesia, Poland. From the 14th to the 18th century, the estate and the village belonged to the Stange family. The current palace likely originated from a fortified house (Festes Haus) of the 16th century. From 1726, it was expanded and baroque-ised by the Freiherrn von Schmettau. Later, Count Heinrich XXXVIII Reuss zu Köstritz (1748–1835) furnished the palace, which had been in his family's possession since 1750, with a collection of old German panel paintings. He also had some influence on the founding of the Moravian Church community. In the early 19th century, the palace was extended to the southwest with a garden hall. It became one of the most important social centres in the region. The landscape park, with picturesque rock formations and idyllic park buildings, was opened to the public and became very popular. In the late 1930s, the Stonsdorf estate, including Ober- and Mittel-Stonsdorf, was partly leased to Hans-Adalbert von Restorff and indirectly to the Hirschberg branch of Deutsche Bank and Diskonto-Gesellschaft. In 1937, Felicitas Princess Reuss married Otto Prince zu Ysenburg und Büdingen at Schloss Stonsdorf. A notable owner until his death in 1942 was the politically controversial Heinrich XXXIII Reuss zu Köstritz, followed formally by his two children from his first marriage to Margarete Princess of Prussia, Princess Marie Luise and Prince Heinrich II, until expropriation. After the transfer to Poland in 1945, the palace was used as a children's holiday home, later by the local fire brigade, but fell into increasing disrepair. Today, the palace has been restored, and the landscape park has been restored by uncovering the original paths and replanting. It now operates as a hotel and spa.
